Sharing Broadband Connections, Can it be doone? Options

I was wondering if any of you computer gurus have figured out how to connect two seperate computers on the same broadband connection to a single server...

I have a LinkSys router that I use to share my present connection with two computers. Of course, I can't connect them both to a server at the same time, both get bottle-necked on the port 12203 thingy-ma-bob.

I'd love to have friends and parisioners over for a shared frag-fest!

I was running 4 off one modem I use a network switch but now my ISP figured out what I was doing and has limited me to 2 external IP's so only my dads comp and mine can get out to the internet but I am going to fix this I am going to give my dads IP to the my file/mass mp3 server so that he and my sister have to connect to the server to get to the internet so when she is on his intenet will be slow but that s ok because I pay for it anyways and she is hardly ever on so its no big deal for him

father what OS you running maybe I can help you out I know how to network in 2000/xp with little trouble and I can make the network work in 98 buts it way more of a pain in the ass (it does not work all the time I am still faily new at networking)

Uh, that first sentence of yours shows that I am ALREADY way over my head! LOL

I'm using the ol' Win98SE thing...haven't gathered enough reasons to convince the boss (she's Welsh and MOST frugal) to switch over to WinXP yet.

Interesting...I thought that if it could be accomplished the answer would lie in the use of alternative ports for connection or something...never even dreamed that the network of the two comps could be tweaked to make it happen!

I only have the one ISP connection...the LinkSys router does the NAT thingy to make it seperate for browsing.

Would a different setup allow it to happen? A simple hub with a network tweak?

I was so hoping that you would say you are running 2000/xp from the sounds of what you are saying both of the comps are sharing one ip if this is the case it makes life a little harder if you can give me a pic like this it would help




I will have to boot up my sister machine in the morning and try to refresh my self with 98 networking (been runing 2000pro then XP pro I love xp ) so I will get back to you on this tommorow see I can can figure it out

Yeah, epacy...my router automatically does NAT.

But that doesn't allow two comps to connect to one game server, unfortunately.

sigma know all what if you mean networking I taught myself by trial and error and I have been using comps since the days of my 4mhz, 8mhz when I turned on the turbo LOL 286 that my dad and I built when I was like 12 I use comps every single day for only 2 things gaming (MOB) and to learn more about comp related topics (hardware sofware networking overclocking whatever if it has anything to do with comps I like learning about it) I am about to go to toronto to start a collage course on webmastering and system admin (if O.S.A.P will give me the money I hope)

FATHER here are 2 pics that might help you out the first is what you sould have in you uder network connections and the second might be your prob this has fixed alot of my probs networking with diff OS's 3 xp boxs with my sisters POS that cant run xp just make sure that the number is diffeerent on your 2 rigs may not be the prob but it might be (cant hurt anything so give it a try)



hilight the first one I think I cant remeber if its the first or the second one but it will bring to to the next pic then click on the one I have hilighted in blue then chage the number in the red box and see if that fixes it

Sokhar! It's...starting...to make...SENSE! Networking...that art of making...computers...COMMUNICATE...is just...JUST within...my grasp!

I'm going to try that. I've not installed the IPX/SPX protocols as I've never had the need to. My NIC cards have seperate addresses because that's what the NAT thing needs...but I'm going to see if that makes the difference.

Has anyone ever heard of using port 12204 as an alternative connection for MOHAA? Seems like I read that somewhere before.

Good on YOU, laddy-buck! All the best computer advice I've ever received came from those who were self taught. All the worst boondoggles came from thems what had pieces of paper proving what computer gurus they were. I can see you have a bright future ahead of you. The current tech slump is just that...current. Computers, networking, and web content are still gonna dominate the world.

But just to make you jealous...my first computer was a SINCLAIR QL! Thrill to power of the 16 bit 7.5Mhz (that's Mhz, not Ghz) chipset! I was the envy of all my friends after I maxed the RAM out at 640kb. Geeks would come from across state just to look at it...and I ain't foolin'! LOL Of course, the 8 color 256x256 resolution was a thing of beauty to behold...and the microcassettes with a FULL 100kb storage capacity were straight out of Buck Rogers...

If I Hadn't sold it at a garage sale for $5, it'd be worth a mint now, I suspect...D'OH!

when I was referring to your IP addreass I ment external IP not internal ip what NAT does is give you two internal ip's spliting one external IP EG 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 to 24.144.60.573

what protocol are you using at the moment if any

I found a link with a command to change port for the game but I think it server side command here is the command

port number " set net_port ##### " Set prot number for game. Default:12203


where do you get this error for port 12203 what are you doing to make it come up

and that does make me jealous but I do have an old 486 in parts in my current night stand (old at case ) I have been thinking about putting it back togeather and see if I can OC it just for the hell of it

What kind of router and broadband do you have? I've read around the web, the concurrence is that most newer games have to have a hard ISP# and not a NAT translation.

I did, however, find that my router's firmware was old, by several versions. I downloaded the current .bin file...but I'm chicken to install it! LOL

I'm a firm believer that if it ain't broke...

I am at present using TCP/IP protocol on both computers, and share access to each other with Microsoft file sharing.

The DSL router connect using PPPoE.

The only reason I was asking about the alternative port was that I wondered by setting each machine to access the game server on a different port might, I think (in smoke-filled moments), get around the NAT bottle-neck that I experience.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be absent for a couple of days pouring over that website you gave a link to. GREAT stuff, all layed out in monkey-terms. as Sigma-Chi would say!
