system info, computer Options

Will hopefully be looking at getting a new comp. system any thoughts for a good gamming puter ....looking for pros..&..cons..of pentium & amd .
How much ram ..what king vid card ...monitor to look for
Any help would be grate

I am a die hard AMD fan, combined with the new nForce2 mobos & you have a solid base for a gaming rig at an incredible discount to Intel based systems.

it really depends on how experienced you are with putting together a system & how large of a bank roil.

You plan on overclocking?

If I was going to build a new gaming box today with limited funds, I would pick up the
Epox 8rda+ ($83)
AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (65) if overclocking you need good cooling, HS & fan ($40-50)
512MB Twinmos/Winbond (CH-5 chip) PC3200 RAM ($91)
Video card, I prefer Nvidia, anything above Ti4200 should fly,Albatron Geforce FX 5200 AGP 8X ($70)

What else do you need? If you plan on buying on-line, make sure you get it from http://www.newegg.com

Dude. AMD XP 2600+, Asus A7N8X mobo, a hard drive with an 8mb cache, Corsair RAM for sure around 512mb, Nvidia of course, like Mayhem said anything above a TI4200 will do just fine.

yep, ditch the pentium & check out AMD. Get a newer board though w/ the nforce mobo. And don't go cheap w/ ram go corsair like epacy said. Wish I didn't hav emy cheap ass DDR ram.

A7N8X from Asus, you cant go wrong. Just make sure its rev 2.0 board. I just upgraded from the Gigabyte 7vrxp, and believe me, the Asus board is nice. I can finally unlock my processor by dropping the multiplier and cranking up the fsb to 333 all in bios without any problem. Before I had to connect two pins on the socket to do this. If you don't want to upgrade anytime soon. Go for the AT 9800 pro. Having a more updated vid card will be great for games that come out now and in the future and then you wont have to upgrade. Like Mayhem said though, anything with TI4200 and above will work fine. The only difference I have noticed with this new card is right when I enter the game I don't go through that 1 second pause but thats in Spearhead. Graphics still look the same, of course my TI4200 was a little overclocked. A good source also is Pricewatch and for reviews Toms Hardware

Thanks everyone out of four ..not one said anything nice about pentium ....gets ya to think ....like AMD am running atholon 850..good puter but not fast enought ...also running Nvidia geforce2 mx only 32meg on card not enought ram have truble running games ....

I have a 3.06 ghz Pentium (hyper-threading) with an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro video card and 1 gb memory.

Not a hiccup during game play. I have always used Intel and have never had an issue.

Cobra, I have always had intel as well. But, after getting into computer components I just don't like the fact that I can't unlock the processor. AMD's allow u to overclock the card & change the FSB.

With a 3.06 Intel and a 9700 pro there should be no reason to unlock the processor.

True, but if I had an AMD rather than 1.69 P4...I would be able to bump up my FSB. Instead I cant even play with my settings.

Intel's top of the line CPU almost always beats AMD's, if money wasn't a factor of course everyone would buy Intel, my hunch says"Cobra" doesn't want to spend a great deal of money on just the CPU.

AMD wins the performance/ price ratio hands down, add overclocking to the equation & you can have an awesome box for a fraction of the cost of Intel based.

Intel is overrated, they jus' advertise more.

If you are going to blow the cash, blow it big.
How often do you get new computers? Not often. Don't have regrets.
My 'puter is good, but i wish i had spent the extra cash and got more power. Regrets, cuz', thems there is regrets.

Just don't order from Dell, Gateway, or those companies.
They mark up the prices, and you end up with more money
tied up in lower end hardware. Plus they sneak in all that junk software.

'Build it and they will come.'

Check around with the local computer folks. Sometimes you can keep
somethings, like cd burners, hard drives, or anything like that from your old computer, and put it in a new tower. Doing this will leave extra funds for
other things you want, like top end graphics cards, sound cards, or surround
speakers. I traded in my old one with a local computer dude, he built my new one, using some of the things I had upgraded in my old one. He gave me $200 for the old tower, and for $350 I got a new setup. AMD 1800+ (1.533ghz) 512 ddr, 40 gig hard drive, new tower and power supply. I kept my burner, graphics card, speakers, and monitor. 'Zillah chipped in the operating system, Windows XP Professional. Works real good too, no problems. That was a year ago.
