I recently built a computer for someone designed around an Athlon 64 and ATI 9800 Pro. It had a 200 gig Western Digital SATA hard drive with a DVD+/-RW and CD-RW. The Corsair Micro memory had a serious issue with the MSI NEO Platinum motherboard. It only reported half of each DIMM. Anyway, the speed of the system was amazing. Assembling a computer will teach you about components, conflicts, and other beneficial intricacies. I agree that purchasing a Dell would not be advisable.

Have to disagree. I have owned 3 Dells and recommended Dell to numerous family members. No problems at all.

Sounds like a driver issue.

Dell does produce nice computers, on the whole, but assembling components into a computer offers distinct advantages. You know exactly what goes in it so any driver issues can usually be easily traced. If price is an issue, then I would probably recommend going with a pre-assembled computer simply for the value of components, software, and support. Remember that if you build one, then you are the user and tech support.
