MOB rules!

FatherMurphy: older than dirt, twice as filthy.

Notice in these posts that there are quite a few older players here! A welcome change...adds a certain je ne sais quoi that I enjoy. I am reminded an interview with a survivor of the Indianappolis disaster...he made mention of the fact that alot of the really young sailors simply gave up and slipped beneath the waves, while the older guys, regardless of their wounds, kept on. In specific I remember, "once you've reached a certain age, I guess you have a vested interest in seeing it through to the end".

I just no longer have the rapid reaction times that an 18 year old has. So I have to play a bit smarter, that's all. If that means I have to break out the tentpegs and set up camp occasionally, so mote it be! LOL

Anyhoo, I live in Texas. Can't figure that one out, as I left this state in my youth vowing never to return. Well, actually...it was a promise to the judge. But things change, yes?

MOHAA/MOHAAS is the only First Person Shooter I have ever played. I have played wargames for over thirty years (anyone here remember the Avalon Hill Company?). I guess you could say I'm an amatuer historian, and know more about WWII than I do about my own family. Of course, if YOU knew my family, you'd understand that wasn't unnatural! LOL

Keep up the good work, MOB! Don't ever think that your efforts and expenses go unappreciated.

I remember Avalon Hill Games, "Panzer Blitz"--Hours and hours of Good Stuff!

I am like you, Murph, older and wiser. Age and treachery on the field of battle is more to my liking. The older I get, the more treacherous I become. I used to think getting killed alot was a bad thing, but I think of how many of those gaming rookies I take with me and it puts me back into the black.

Life is short, so my goal is to make their young lives shorter online. It works for me.

Older and More Treacherous,

Yep...Panzerblitz was a good one.

I spent years of my life playing Squad Leader and Advanced Squad leader. Man...some of the historical modules used to take 24 hours to play a game, which was only one of 10 to 12 in the campaign. Used to do it in one sitting...of course, copious amounts of bud and beer MAY be why those games took so long...

Still have all that Squad Leader stuff...literally THOUSANDS of counters and many many maps...don't know why I hold onto it, but ya never know...we might end up sharing a room in the old folks home!

See ya out there, compadre antiguo!

Yeah, DixieShooter...Avalon Hill was really the first company to produce board wargames for public consumption, starting way back in the late 1950s. Was a unique idea...I don't think I've ever seen anything of similar ilk that predates that. Perhaps the form existed in war colleges somewhere...but definately not commercial.

They grew in size and scope and by the '70s were making some really good strategic to tactical level wargames. Of course, they weren't for everyone...I remember that Advanced Squad Leader ended up having a three hundred triple column page rulebook...some of which I could probably still quote if prompted! LOL Had I studied torts with the same zeal I'm sure I could have passed the state bar exams. You had to know the rules inside and out to be a good player, much as an officer has to be intimately familiar with the capabilities and weaknesses of his men.

But then came the '90s and the advent of computers. Avalon Hill's already limited market just faded away...I think they eventually sold to Hasbro or Mattell, and still produce a very limited product line.

Strangely enough, the form lost alot when it translated to computers. Sitting and facing a monitor just doesn't compare to the face-to-face comraderie and competition that the old board games had. But all of the strategic-level hexagon based wargames that you see today owe their inception to Avalon Hill.

As for when I actually (on occasion) tag you...well that's about one for every three you get me, ya dawg! But I do relish the moments, dear sir..believe me! LOL

By the way...I'm related to the Longstreet family. My Grandmother really DID always call it "The War of Northern Aggression"! rolleyes.gif Of course, having been for reconstruction and aligning himself with the Republican party cost Gen. Longstreet much in the way of reputation in later life...I can vividly remember more than once going to Civil War museums as a youth and being ushered out after Grandma signed the guestbook and opened her mouth! laugh.gif

I'm a rockin' on! As long as this chair can hold my bulk! HA!

Careful, there, FaG KillA...you date yourself! biggrin.gif

So you were one of that elite band of sickos too, eh? Good on ya! Man, I might just go down into the cellar and find those boxes...

Ever play the Close Combat series of computer games? About as close to Squad Leader as I've ever found...
