as far as trade goes for the US, I am probably an expert on this topic as I own a freight forwarding company. My customers are importing all kinds of items. Just about anything you can think of, I have imported it. Every single item has a different tax or duty on it. Allot of items are considered duty free. But there are some that are pretty crazy as well. All the taxes are based on what other countries are selling the merchandise for. For example, if a computer part costs usd5.00 to make in China, but usd50.00 to make in Canada, Canada will have a much less tax on it when importing to USA.

There are some items that the US taxes the shit out of in order to force people to buy in the US only. Example, sugar. Sugar has a tax based on the kilo. I believe the tax alone if imported is higher than the price you pay at the store. Why is it taxed so high?? So we are forced to buy all our sugar from Hawaii. There are many quota items like this. What they do to make it seem "fair" they offer a quota on an item. They allow so many to be imported each year that does not have to pay that high tax. But its like playing a game when trying to import. The quota is filled within the first 2 days of the new year, lol. So if you importing sugar and hoping to not have to pay the high tax, you better hope your shipment is not delayed, and hope your shipment is one of the first in line, lol.

Here is an item that is a little tricky for me to understand. Furniture. Furniture is duty free from China. But....., they have added a new tax last year of 199%, thats right, one hundred and ninty nine percent tax on Bedroom Furniture? I have no idea why they have done this.

Nice inside info Nothing-thanks. My guess on the furniture from China thing is the fear consumers would start seeing these items for sale in Dollar sores [ I'm an expert on Dollar stores - I love them as much as they love me]
