I was reading some other ideas for a great next-gen FPS game, and all the ideas were great, especially along the lines of the enviroment being more interactive. But here's a different idea/take on what would be truely, really cool.

One huge map/gameworld of Europe where all players spawn in somewhere near the "frontline"!

Instead of a bunch of little maps, I'm talking a World of Warcraft for the first person shooter. You could spawn in on the map at any point of "friendly" base was controlled. Or you could parachute into contested areas of the map, assuming your drop-off pilot gets by the flak guns and enemy aircraft patrolling the area! You may need an escort.

Gameplay would be a combination of Base Assult/Domination. Destroy enemy bases, then dominate the map for a while while you new base is constructed by an engineer.

Players gain ranks for major accomplishents, which carry over to the next gaming session.

The maps would be so big that it could take days, weeks, or even months before one side would completely overrun Europe for total victory. Every time you joined you could auto-assign to the weaker side, or automatically continue your previous character so you maintain your rank.

The game would actually send instant E-mails to registered players when major events took place, such as the take over of a country, or the release of a new, more powerful tank by one side! Major new tanks, weapons, or equipment could be delivered to either side as part of a gaming "event". This could temporarily give one side the advantage, but soon enough the other side would get it's "event" so the strategy would be to hold the line until you get you badly needed next generation tank, or a delivery of MP44's to the frontline trroops! (i.e. new soldier types to choose from).

And when an important area was lost or about to be lost the Emergency E-mail would come..."Russians pushed back to Stalingrade! It is the Russian last stand! We need reinforcements!" Are you near your computer? smile.gif

And really, why couldn't this be made? If World of Warcraft can do it, why can't an FPS?

Give me COD1 style graphics, but this style gameplay, and I think I'd be hooked for life! And I'd pay a monthly fee to make it work. There's a fortune out there to be made.

There have been games of the type you've described created.. Planetside / WW2 Online, and both never really were very popular and failed miserably.

Did those games get the balance/gameplay right?

Actually, probably wouldn't matter if it did. To make it work, you'd need to attach it to a big name brand, because you'd need a lot playing right away to make it work. COD could still be that name brand. Medal of Honor could too. Or the next gen Battlefiled game. The game you described, WW2 Online...never heard of it.
