I never know what to make of news stories that are chock full of quotes from unidentified persons. I think Al Qaeda is reasserting its efforts in Afghanistan since they are loosing the battle for Iraq. I only wish I could pull up all the in-depth tv documentaries and books regarding Afghanistan from -journalists/soldiers-villagers-leaders-historical etc.,. I've been following since the end of the Ruskiz military 'stay' there. Truly a warring nation - I think the only small slice of peace they ever had was a coupla decades before the Ruskiz went in. I spoke briefly with one guy once who had some connection with the Northern Alliance anti-taliban rebels way back at that time [decade] I really got interested in Afghanistan after seeing a documentary 8 years ago about a kindly/military Afghan rebelllion genius -Massoud- who was fighting the Taliban after they took over from the routed Afghan govt./rusky alliance - he was assasinated by al quaeda 2 days before 9-11.. Trust me -this is good reading- but if you saw this guy on tv he'd look like a friendly starbucks cashier rather than a brilliant frontline military tactician. A soldier's general indeed. In one segment he softly chastised his commanders who didn't follow his specific instructions in bypassing a mine area which resulted in a young soldier's death. Massoud went to visit the grieving family to console them in person. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_Shah_Massoud I mention him because there are some suspicions his assasination are related somewhat to 9-11 I've heard he was killed because he knew something was in the wind regarding his enemy's 9-11 plot [maybe he heard something from a Taliban prisoner?]- and there's the other rumour the CIA [+big $$$] and Pakistan's Intelligence were allied in getting rid off Masdoud so they could get the current Afghan leader in- which I think maybe stretching things -seems like the former is more plausible..... Here's some of the 'speculations'- http://www.counterpunch.org/leupp02142003.html Anyhow, I first started this thread to show indeed the Afghan front was a major one all along as I've pointed out all along -before the latest 'Surge- although Iraq's a big battleground for Al quaeda '- check the past thread-post dates. Every Nato/Afghan general and soldier, afghan villager have seen the Taliban resurging in scary strength numbers and strategical infiltration position for years -years-not months nor weeks-particularly after the focus was switched to Iraq as the new 'front'. Like I said as long as that afghan / Pakistan border is not secured... there'll be endless Taliban flooding over to fight the war-weary soldiers there who will one day sooner than later be going home to leave Afghans to fight for their own democracy-more war..... but I don't see too much chance of big changes happening there anyway. Religion there is more aligned to hard-lined muslim practices compared to some other predominantly-muslim nations.
