A few other points that could stand to be corrected.

Depending upon the report, the ship was anywhere for 12-15 miles off the coast.
When the US had told Israel that very day, we didn't have any ships operating within 100 miles.
There are also records that show orders were issued prior to the attack, orders telling the ship to move a minimum of 20 miles from the coast due to concerns the ship could be misidentified.
Orders which for a variety or reasons where not received in time.

Records show after the initial attack pass, the attack was monetarily called off because one of the pilots reported the Ship as Russian not American.
The pilots were told no Russian ship were in the area an suspected the ship was an Egyptian ship which had shelled the Israeli forces earlier that day.
Prior to the 1st torpedo attack, the Israeli captain tried to identify the ship.
There are conflicting reports at this point.
Some reports claim the Liberty failed to respond to a request to identify itself.
Other reports suggest one of the torpedo boat captains reported the ship as US but was then told there was no US ships in the area.



Captain Tully ordered rescue aircraft to come to our aid. Then, President Lyndon Johnson got on the phone and ordered the recall himself, saying “I don’t give a God damn if every man on board that ship dies, I will not embarrass our ally, Israel.”
You would think something as damaging as that they would offer some supporting evidence.
Of course the reason they don't supply any evidence to support that quote.

I'm willing to bet it's because it never happen.
I do believe there is a chance Johnson may have said "I will not embarrass our ally, Israel" as there are dozens sites mentioning that quote but even then, no official statement from the person he supposedly said that to ( Admiral Lawrence Geis ) during a phone report from the admiral.


Something every single report about his fails to explain, what I think would be the most obvious question.
WHY?
Why would Israel knowing and purposefully attack one of their few important allies?
I'm sure most people have heard the phrase "Fog of war"
A phrase commonly used to try and explain some of the horrible decision's made in the heat of battle.
If people want to portray this horrible accident as a direct and intentional attack by Israel to further their personal agenda. Then lets' apply their same slanted view to other horrible battlefield mistakes.
1) I guess we were secretly at war with France during WWII seeing as how we sunk one of their subs.
2) Apparently WWII was actually a US Civil war or just a war between the US Navy and US Air Force. That is the only explanation why US Planes sunk two US subs.
3) We attacked UN peace keeping forces in 2006 when A-10 Thunderbolts fired on U.N Forces.
If you've ever seen what a strafe run but two A-10's look like it's amazing only 1 person died.
4) In 1966 US Air Force declared war on the US Coast Guard when it attacked one of their ships.
5) Ever hear of Hamburger Hill? Well you probably didn't hear about two Army helicopter firing on US infantry positions killing 2 and injuring over 30
6) In 1995 to Air force planes shot down not one but two Army Black Hawk helicopters.
7) In 1992 while in a training mission with Turkish forces, two live missiles were fires at the bridge of the Turkish ship, killing or injuring all the officers on the ship.
8) So much for Canada being our ally, in 2002 during a training mission a US plane dropped a 500lb bomb on the Canada observation post for the exercise, killing 5
9) 2003 US plane attacks a US convoy killing 15
If that's not enough to show how common mistakes are during wartime.
Then I guess that means were were secretly attacking Iran in 1988 when we downed a CIVILIAN
aircraft killing all 290 people on board.
Does anyone remember what the official response was at the time.
The US mistakenly identified the commercially marked widebody A300 aircraft measuring 177' x 147' weighing 180,000lbs as a military f-14 that measures 64' x 38' and weights 40,000lbs.
So does that mean we couldn't possibly mistake a large civilian plane for a small military one and did it on purpose.
Or does that show my point that horrible mistakes are made in the heat of battle and under the "Fog of War"

BTW even though I rarely agree with Mustangman's post, I genuinely look forward to them as they force me to re-examine my previously held opinions.
Which to me is a good thing.
