I found the following on the IWN forums this week and thought it was interesting.

NorseForce Base Assault strategy PDF

It dovetails nicely with our Barbarossa and Smolensk strategy threads. I don't agree with everything in the PDF.

A key thing that the PDF does talk about is where stock tanks are weak. Such as hitting the top turret hatch.

Thanks for the link! They obviously don't have much experience taking down bases with tanks as they missed all kinds of good long range firing angles on each of the maps, but they have put together a really nice document for those who have missed many of the secrets of the game.

We should pin a forum thread that simply reads: WHEN RIDING IN A TANK, DO NOT FIRE YOUR MG AT AN ENEMY TANK!! Just yesterday I rolled up to the long range shelling position on R3 near the Axis spawn by the factory in Ponyri. A good shot from their 88 could take me out. I'm basically all by myself in the corner of the map by the Police station, lobbing shots from my Panzer. I'll have to sit in my spot for a minute and a half. And then I hear footsteps. Some jerk jumps into my tank and starts firing his machine gun, spraying it towards the R3. He couldn't hit anything at that distance, but he manages to draw the fire of not just the 88, but two tanks as well. These are the types of players who should be removed from the game!

As are the guys who ride in the MG position in the jeeps who appear to be shooting at passing birds...like the jeep isn't vulnerable enough without some guy firing off warning signals as we approach a base... rolleyes.gif

Maybe I should swipe some of those Stanjel pigeons and put them in the maps for them to shoot at.

...

Specific things I didn't agree with:

QUOTE
Don't get distracted!
Don't let anything get in your way when you're off to breach a bunker. All the time, I see guys who are supposed to breach a bunker get distracted by enemy infantry who are no threat to them while inside a tank. Unless you can take them quick and easy between the shells, then just don't bother.

Not sure I agree with that one. If you don't take out infantry, their teammates will start to spawn closer and you risk getting shot with anti-tank weapons. Plus, while moving to the front lines, you should always kill infantry that you see trying to infiltrate your sideo of the map.

QUOTE
If you planted the bomb, and then get killed outside, then it doesn't matter that much. You'll still get the bomb score. But if you're down in the bunker just helping to defend, than you're just as well off staying there and blow up with the bunker. This way you get the 4 points of bomb score, and lose 1 for suicide. If you go outside and get killed in the crossfire, then you get nothing.

This was interesting. I'll have to look at the BAS.GSC file about the "assist" scoring. What I suspect is that only the bomb planter ever gets the bonus 4 points. Unless there's a 4 point bonus for being within 1024u of the base when it blows up.

QUOTE
DEATH FROM ABOVE - TRYING TO DEFUSE
Satchels are great to clear out bunkers if used right. When you throw down a satchel, there’s 95 per cent chance that the guy in the basement blows if he stays put with the satchel. If you throw down a grenade, he’s just laughing. Even two grenades aren’t enough if his health is 100 percent. (Three grenades work though, but take a lot of time.) As satchels usually do the job of clearing out bunkers...

Not really true about grenades. Satchels are best down the stairs, but grenades down the vent pipe are generally very deadly. The trick with grenades is to get them bounced into the middle of the floor below, not stuck in a corner.

Also, if the bomb has just been planted... sneaky may be best. That allows you to sneak downstairs and shoot the enemy while they're busy setting up with arty / satchels / smoke / whatever.
