Before I got hooked on MOHAA, I was a HUGE Flight & Submarine sim fan.
I've spent countless hours playing SH3.
I'm one of those die-hard players who doesn't let the computer plot the torpedo course.
I do it all by hand the same way a real weapons officer would of done during WWII.

If you want to try playing hard-core, here is a great site to get you started.

Bought this game a few weeks back and have been enjoying it ever since. Graphics are great and camera angles provide terrific views of your sub, targets and aircraft. Stormy night missions are really fun and the sound effects are so good that when it claps thunder, my dog actually ran for cover. LOL. Manual tracking and targeting is tough, but so much more rewarding, as Druid has mentioned. Thanks for the links, I can certainly use all the help I can get!

The most mods ever made for this game are over at
SUBSIM.COM where I am a forum moderator. I have
been playing the Silent Hunter series from the beginning
and was a member of the Mod Team that made the Pacific
mod for SH2. Been playing SH3 since it came out and with
just the right mods, it is a great game. 3 realism mods were
added to my gaming experience and it makes the game TOTALLY
different in the dynamic campaign. Starting from a base makes
it realistic and many things can happen between your base and the
patrol zone but only WITH the mods. Its very DULL without them....

PS. My handle on Subsim forums is: FAdmiral

What 3 mods do you use?

I've tried a copy, can't remember the name but I really liked the one where it changes the convoy settings.

Druid, thanks for the 1.4 patch info. I had 1.3 (I think), but have now updated. I feel the same way about having to start at the base every time too. Yeah, you're right, half the time spent at sea is leaving the base and skirting the land masses just to START the patrol. I don't know if you remember or played the sub game (dont remember the title) on Sega. It was a great game back in the day, and it would start you out on patrol, sometimes IMMEDIATELY in the middle of a battle group pinging your position like crazy! Talk about getting right to it! LOL. Do you play multiplayer? Thanks again for the info! Happy hunting!

Funny you would mention that as "688 Attack Sub" on Sega is what got me hooked on sim games.

Does this look familiar?

thanks I'll take a look.

BTW Sabot, You got me reminiscing about 688 attack sub so much I had to go download an emulator & Rom to play it on the PC. It was so outdated it was like playing pong.

Hahaha. I know what you mean. Sometimes it is better to remember than to re-visit. I have done that very thing with other games, and I always put them away a little disappointed. Sorry about that, but it was a cool game back in the day!
