With the pc OFF and the monitor ON, does your monitor flash a message with something like "Monitor self test complete Check PC Not receiving signal" or a similar message?

My 2 year old Viewsonic monitor died just that way. It would display for only a second or two then go black, with the power button blinking like it was in sleep mode. If I turned it off and back on, same thing, it would display then go black again after a second or two.

Bottom line - new monitor fixed the problem here.

Your mileage may vary. If you've been having computer trouble, how do you know your computer is putting out an image to the monitor?

Had this problem, it was becasue of a video card issue, either I didn't have the drivers installed or it was pluggged into the wrong one. Try switching the plug, or starting in safe mode if you can...

If you can tell me if you get this message or not, I can tell you if you need to ask your mom and dad for monitor money!

In fact, unplug the monitor from the electrical outlet, then disconnect the monitor from your video card on the computer.

Then, plug the monitor into the electrical outlet and turn it on. Do you get a message display on the monitor?

If not, and the power lite just flashes green/amber, then your monitor is probably junk. If you get a message that appears like the one I posted earlier, then, most likely, your video card or some other part of your PC is involved.

Another thing it may be is if the refresh rate is out of range of what the monitor can handle. However that would have been a direct result of you changing the refresh rate of your video card.

What kind of video card are you running? Does the video card receive power directly from your power supply? ( one of the power supply electrical leads plugs directly into your video card)

If it does, then my theory is that your power supply is the problem, as newer video cards are very demanding in their power needs and since you mentioned your machine "locked up" I would venture to say that the power supply is suspect, as a failed monitor NEVER causes a computer to lock up.

If you know how, unplug any secondary equipment, that is not necessary for the computer to operate, from the power supply (i.e. CD/DVD drives, floppy drives, any usb sources that receive power from the computer, secondary hard drives, etc.) Then, try to boot the computer and see what happens. If you get a desktop, your power supply is most likely the cause of all of this.

However, your power supply could be too far gone at this point to do anything too, so if you have a spare power supply, or can get one to try, you might go that route, keeping in mind to only plug in the necessary equipment for the test.

Hope this helps.

(Or you could just try the C4 option. Would be easier for me too. smile.gif)

The same thing happened to me awhile back. Turn on the computer and you could hear it go through the cycles of booting up. The monitor light would come on and kinda flash but thats all.. no messages period.

I called the company that made the monitor. They asked me a couple of questiions and immediately said the monitor was toast.

They had to send me a new monitor and I had to ship my fresh toasty one to them.

Now... the morale of the story is; have you called the monitor company and asked for their input yet?
