Games are getting more and more complicated. I know some OpenGL too, and I have some friends who have taken the graphics programming course my school offers, but to design a decent game, it takes a LOT more then some OpenGL programming. Go design a game like MOH and then get back with me. You probably want to learn some Intel x86 assembly programming too, so have fun with that.

The problem is code optimizers can only optimize so much. If you want to get the most out of your game and the system it is running on, there are things that you really need to do in assembly. Now most companies probably have a standard set of assembly libraries that they wrote themselves, and use them for the core. I would guess that a lot of the game engine cores are programmed in assembly, to optimize it as much as possible.

well i have the full quake2 source code... the only assembly in there is done in the ref_soft.dll... which is the software rendering... meaning rendering without using opengl... of course if u use opengl u wont need to use ref_soft at all... skipping the assembly language completely.

I was just looking at one of the Quake engine sites, and it is saying there there are .asm files that you have to compile to use the engine. I never claimed to know it all(even though it may seem like it), I'm just going by what I have read.

A couple of game programmers from id used to drink at my bar. They told m to even be a tester (just play the damn games) you had to know how to write the code and what not. That sucks! I just wanted to play them and say "this sucks, this is cool, this is really cool, and the game crashed when I did this." Unfortunately, you have to find the problem for them after that.
