I understand your point; however, in Eubonics, "Nigga" is not the same derogatory, insulting word as "Nigger." We teach our students to never use either word, as it will only lead to confusion and possible confrontation, as you point out Silver. White people should never cross the line, even with your friends. Black people, as a common courtesy to Whites and others, should stop using the confusing word "Nigga." At my school we teach Standard English.

It's not a hopeless cause. I work with them everyday. There are problems, but nothing that causes me to want to give up. They still have a chance. The world has changed, and violence is always a sad and troublesome fear. Nonetheless, I haven't lost hope in the youngsters I work with. They are not losers. Will they be able to handle the complex issues that will stagger their imaginations in the future? I hope so.

I guess you all better hope that we teachers can figure out how to accomplish this difficult responsibility.

Im going to go out on a limb here and say some of you saying that dropping the N bomb is acceptable. In the south, its a very big issue in certain areas. I lived in fla, half my family is Ny italian and NY irish, the other is georgia crackas (aka Irish lol) so i have a pretty broad idea of culture. Not to mention I have more black friends by number, then white.

For a teacher to condone the usage of the N word shows the quality of teachers and I will let you decide how to take it.

I wouldnt call a black person the N word, in the south its extremely disrespectful. Have i said it while listiening to Outkast, Wutang clan, 3-6 Mafia, Or Ludacris. Yes, but like someone stated its how its used. However out of respect for a friend of mine, or a person who is black. i wouldnt use the term. It just doesnt really show respect the idea of the New South anymore. Everyone has trash.

Agreed. I had a student that did not turn in his project by the deadline so he did not get his grade (they were told this many times) and his father called to argue with me. I told him that I wasn't just teaching him video skills, but responsibility. He flat out told me that that was not my job but his. Well I then wanted to tell the parent that he wasn't doing a very good job of it for his son to think that he had special rules....but of course I didn't.

So who is to blame? Student or Parent?
