I saw SPR on opening night too. The entire first 15 minutes blew me away. I had heard all the stories from my grandfathers and their friends about WWII, down to the sounds and feeling they had. It wasn't till I saw that sequence that I kind of understood what they were going through. I just remember suddenly taking in a huge breath after the opening like I hadn't really breathed the whole time it was going on. The sound of the bullets hitting wet flesh and whizzing by... crazy stuff. sorry hellfighter one more.pez ,hit the nail on the head-i thought i new alot about ww2 when i saw spr and then that first 15 min came and all the previuos glory war films went out the door.i remember say holy shit these guys are 18 and some as young as 15,blew me away!i felt like having a drink after the beach scene. bob touches alittle on that too. im no p***y but i always wonder if i was in the same situation would i freeze too? My sentiments too regarding SPR- those Rangers trained so long and hard for the beach landing only to be annhillated as soon as they and others hit Omaha beach. recall the Brit Paras that stormed the formidable Merville Battery on D-Day too, so young, with most officers not much older either. Well I guess sadly nearly all armies were using young folks by that time of the war too with casualty attrition rates so high. The 2nd time I saw SPR at the theater, I went with a good young lady friend of mine.... as soon as the beach assault scene was overI turned to look at her and tears were rolling down her cheeks. most movies before 1970 about war were focus so much on heroism and courage, which is exactly what america needed. SPR raelly tied to reinact alot of the realizm of the war. You would have rarely seen any director in the classic movies hiring scads of the diabled to depict the warriors who had their libms blown off. I was so moved by the movie that I bought it, adn cant watch it. Being one of three brothers, it hit me like a brick, and my mother wont watch it at all. It was almost too real. Movies like full metal jacket and even apocolypse now springboarded us into an era of expecting realism, and not necessarily heroism. Difficult to compare tora tora tora, and a dude being turned into a pink cloud after the sticky bomb goes off prematurely (the most diturbing part to me). My grandfater was on the southern caost of Britain operating an AA gun, and had some of the most incredible stories...

The barrack scenes for Full Metal Jacket and the obsticale course scenes were filmed at my army barracks in(Queens Division) Royston Hertfordshire UK.
If you look closely in the obsticle coruse scene you can see a British soldier dressed in camo gear in the back ground. -------------------- |

Ohhh, you're one of those eagle eyed types that spot miniscule but glaring edting errors in movies! Pretty sharp. It reminds me of someone spotting a funny thing in the 90's movie Glory [american civil war story of 54th 'coloured' Mass. regiment] - in the opening battle scene, Union troops are marching into battle and some putz wearing a wristwatch can be seen lol[mid distance]. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

QUOTE(Pezking) That was me dude. sorry but laughing ! ooook, Why laughing at Pezking's reaction? I'm curious..... for me, the scene [SPR beach landing] was almost making me ducking in my chair hearing the whizzing bullets. I had a similar feeling as Pezking's watching the last scene in the movie Glory when the 54th against all odds charge into a portion of Fort Wagner taking collosal casualties... furthermore the movie erroneously shows them taking cover then making a final assault when in fact the charge was continuous! Thats Hollywood for you ,they protrated Bridge on thr River Kwia with similar disfunctions in that the British Officer didnt redesign and build the bridge to show UK enginerring ,but to get better food and conditions for his men.People put their lives on the line for their country and this is how we repay them..its wrong, we should be true to them not try to glorify it....thats just belittling them. -------------------- |

I think he was laughing because my post was double edged. Kind of joking that someone turned around and saw me crying... but on the same hand, there were many parts in that movie that I got a bit emotional. Usually it was just the heavy chest with the lump in the throat but I had a little tear overfill from the eyes as well. When Mellish took the knife in the chest while Upham just sits out on the stairs... I was freaking!
Oh, and speaking of filming on site. That movie "In the Army Now" with Pauly Shore and Andy Dick... the boot camp sequence was filmed at Ft. Sill, OK where I did my boot camp and AIT. That place crazy sucks. -------------------- ![]() |

Yep that Mellish scene was 'tense'. But I can understand Upham's freezing. I remember in High School gym classes I loved going on the high bar/climbing but one day the gym class teacher wanted be to flip backwards while sitting on the high bar, and confident as I was before that on the high bar, I just froze in place.... my mind wanted to proceed but my body just held on as if for dear life. Too bad it took the horrors of WW1 and the awful frequency of British/French executions for cases of cowardice to somewhat understand combat fatigue and the effect on young people who endure hails of flying lead/metal projectiles. That didnt help them at all. Remember he wasn't a veteran infantryman either. He was dragged into the dangerous mission even though he was a staff clerk. This was one of Captain Miller's few boo-boos. I found it odd though that Upham shot that German he felt betrayed by because he wanted him set free earlier on, then he lets the other 3 or 4 German prisoners go to live and fight another day and kill Allied soldiers later on.
