So the main reason the formerly floundering Surge took off and gained its impetus was because of the strateggic launchpad it had when the Sunni Awakening Councils formed up in Anbar province in Iraq.
These former enemies of the US Forces turned on Al quaeda and in so doing allowed the US operation to proceed forward instead of getting bogged down watching its back and lines of communications in Anbar.

Lately Iraqi security Forces moved into the province to officially take over 'affairs'.
Reminds me of the Soviets sweeping through Eastern Europe in the last months of WW2 and de-mobilising the various partisan units who had survived hell combatting the nazis on their lonesome- the thing is, Stalin's M.O was to summon the Partisan leaders once his troops got in the areas under the pretext of post-war leadership arrangements. These brave partisan leaders disappeared for eternity having taken the bait.

Now the Iraqi security forces are playing the same game - a potentially dangerous game- in arresting Awakening Council members recently.
It's not bad enough that nearly 300,000 Iraqi Security forces could not step up to the plate for the last several years, but now they are making dumb-assed moves that could potentially rip apart the hard-earned stability in Anbar somewhere down the road.
