Hi. I'm very new to COD4, so maybe my opinion doesn't mean much, but figured I'd throw it out there anyway.
Playing a few HQ servers and I can't help but think I like better how some others are set up for score/time limit. Ours seems set up that most games end by the time limit, and whoever is in the lead, wins. Others I played are set up that the score limit is usually reached before the time limit. I really like this second configuration better, because it allows for great "comebacks". I was in a game where the score limit was 350 and we we down something like 190-330 ans stormed back to win! That was really fun. On the other hand, on our server I've been on teams that started storming back late in a game, but it never mattered because the time limit always expired first. Basically, the last 3-4 minutes were futile, there just wasn't enough time to come back. Once we lost by 5 points when we had the headquarters set up only because time limit expired. I know comebacks are still possible, but I just find with the time limit being the deciding factor, often you look at the score then the timer and realize the last few minutes are meaningless, you just don't have time. When the time limit isn't much of a factor, it means a team is never dead even in a game until the fat lady sings (i.e. winning score reached! Anyways, just MY thought, perhaps most disagree, maybe a few do. Just wanted to hear opinions. -------------------- |

Hey MoD, thought I'd toss out an opinion to agree with your observation of the time limit vs. a score limit. I too have played on many different HQ servers and I rather prefer the score over time limit any day. Like you, I have been involved in some real nail biters where my team was able to come back from WAY behind and win because of the score rather than a time limit and it makes for a much better match with some real excitement toward the end.
Another thing that I am increasingly aware of is the in-game respawn time. I play like a crazy man, not afraid to rush in and destroy the HQ or to capture while taking all or a few enemy with me. Because I don't lurk and hide for 20 minutes afraid to attack the HQ, I end up dying ALOT. Therefore, respawn time becomes a huge factor for me and I feel that 10 seconds in the respawn box is entirely too long. Some servers have theirs at 5 seconds and while this is an eternity, at times, it is a much more accomodating time to wait than the 10 seconds other servers have imposed. Heck, I have left the game to get a sandwich and a drink only to forget all together that I was playing due to the extended spawn time. LOL. BTW, I don't know how you guys have yours set up, but it is something to consider if you are following the 10 second rule........ and again, just an opinion. |

Now thats not a bad idea, I'm all for a score limit versus a time limit. Some of the servers that have that type of set-up can get pretty crazy towards the end.
And by the way S@BOT.... thanks for the nasty image I have in my head now. -------------------- |

And by the way S@BOT.... thanks for the nasty image I have in my head now. Any other thoughts? I'm totally for a score limit game now after some more playing. I play on a server with a 250 score limit, and it can be intense at the end. I've seen leads slip away, and I've seen us power back. On the other hand, I've been in non-score limit games when the last 10 minutes were meaningless. A comeback was literally impossible. IMO, not fun playing those games. If you team is getting murdered, it is nice that a score limit ends the misery soon enough. You might even want to name the server "HQ score limit 250" or something like that. I know personally I'm looking for servers with a reachable score limit. -------------------- |

I like the idea of the shorter respawn time. Only thing is with us playing in TWL the time is 10 seconds. Of course we have claymores, noob tubes, c4, etc. that isn't allowed in TWL either so I don't see why we couldn't do it.

We've been back and forth on the respawn time.
1) For ranked servers, we've only been able to set the time limit as either 10 seconds or instant. 5 seconds does not appear to be an option. When we had it instant, there was a big outcry about the constant spawn kills. If there is a server command that will allow 5 seconds, please send it to me and we will try that. 2) The time limit sounds like a good idea. We'll give that a try later today. Old Man Mike |

Ahhhh, yes! The "ranked and unranked" situation. I always forget abooot that and what you can and cannot change in the configs to maintain that "ranked" status. I must be playing on some unranked servers where the spawn time is shorter than 10 secs. Didn't realize it at the time........thanks for clearing that up. Perhaps we will see a server-side change to that situation in the future.
As for the score limit vs. time, I hope you will find that to be a welcomed change! Good job Marty for bringing that up and thanks Geno and Mike for the info. |

Old Man Mike Thanks for this. I really think it will help. Also, I am for a instant respawn. Don't really get the outcry. In UO, we were always proud to say spawn killings part of the game, get used to it. I really don't like the 10 second wait time for a game where lives that lasts longer than 20 seconds are exceptional! Nothing frustrates me more than getting killed within a second or 2 or respawn, THEN having to wait 10 second every single life! I'll take the occasional spawn raping over constantly twiddling my fingers waiting desperately to get back in the game. In UO with big maps and long lifespans, 10 second didn't seem like an eternity. Now, it does. Anyway, I don't mean to sound like a whiner, but I suppose coming late to the party, I can add some thoughts that hasn't been talked about a while. Certainly, I think the key to a great server is the "fun" factor. People want to play where the game is fast and fun, not punishing. Score limit over time limit should really help the "punishment" of being stuck on a weak team with no hope of winning and yet having to play out the timer. Instant repsawn would keep it exciting too, especially in headquarters where often you are already stuck waiting to respawn when you team has the headquarters. I definitely think reducing respawn time is an idea to reconsider, esecially if there is no alternative. -------------------- |

The Harcdore HQ score limit has been reduced from 500 down to 350. I kept the time the same at 15 mins but will change it if that does not work well with the score limit. Feedback welcomed.
Spawning will remain at 10 seconds for now since I heard more complains after it was reduce to instant than I did when it was at 10 seconds. The other advantage of 10 seconds is that it is the same as what we have to play in TWL. OM Mike |
