Anyone else fancy these games too.....
Recently I got hooked on Highway to the Reich by Matrix games. Based on the 1944 Arnhem campaign. It has a very creatively designed engine and troop order management is exceptional= given its detail it's very easy to learn.

Curious to know if you have favourites... and if any other old farts here used to play the strategy board games with chit pieces and dice> like Advanced Squad Leader.

I was a big fan of the Close Combat series. Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far was the best.

Yeah, I was hooked on that too in MSN games zone.... A zillion maps! Did you ever play Close Combat 3 and 4 after #2? Those were good follow ups.

I loved all the old Close Combat series as well. Bridge Too Far was probably my favorite... the later titles were still good and the graphics got better, but they didn't have the simplistic approach as 1 and 2. I got annoyed w/the weapon accuracy in the later titles too.

Overall, Panzer General gets my vote as best "accessible" wargame. Gary Grigsby's War in Russia and Pacific War get my vote for best wargame PERIOD. (also, considering they came out before windows...smile.gif

I never made it to number one on the ladder, but got to I think 13 or so. I played the number 1 guy a bunch of times and he always kicked my ass, even on maps I made! I did have a popular map out for a while, but it all seemed to die so quickly. I didn't get the third game (i think), but did get the 4th one, Battle of the Bulge I think it was...

In the Russian front version one annoying thing that happened on occasion was an Elephant or a jsu152 not only killing an enemy tank but setting of a chain reaction destroying near-adjacent tanks too, lol.

Wow, not too shabby BG! My favourite time there was in the chat area and some of the CC clans were pretty outrageous too-good and bad tongue.gif

Nope- but always wanted to it try back then.
So none of you older farts like me were ever into tabletop wargames- like Advanced Squad Leader, Axis and Allies, Stratego etc.,?

I used to play axis and allies almost everyday. I also have to agree that panzer general was probably one of the best WWII games since it was so easy to play. I also have started playing axis and allies miniatures, Only problem is it is like a card game and you have to spend quite a bit of money to get more units. Just a big money maker for them.
