So let's hear ideas on what you'd think is the proper course to follow here-on in concerning Iraq.
Iraq/Baghdad is no stranger to being the center of calamity-type civil strife. Doing a tiny bit of research I found Christians were living alongside Muslims in Baghdad when Mongols invaded/decimated the region apparently over some inciteful agreement with the Crusaders who were in Syria; Anyway if you're unfamiliar with modern day Iraq's history and the region's ancient history, have a read here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq. My idea is phased withdrawal- starting with Baghdad- focus on securing the borders and slowly weed out all the insurgents and terrorists trapped in the resulting pocket, using Iraqi security forces. I'm sure alot of common Iraqis want payback -they're getting slaughtered. Right now I believe Al quaeda is grinning with being able to; 1] use this war in Iraq as a second front- I don't agree with everyone who thinks this is the war where ALL the terrorists are flocking to in 'someone else's backyard/doorstep instead of here'. I think that war is creating a seperate horde of killers focused on that region only. I'm sure non-iraq Alqueada leadership is busy planning attacks abroad with recruits that are not the unsophisticated pee-on suiciders wreaking havoc in Baghdad. 2] Draw away highly trained troops to conduct costly patrolling operations largely against a cowardly enemy that mingles in with innocent civilians, rather than full fledged operations in Afghanistan to destroy the Taliban ans securing the border their with Pakistan. The Taliban are coming back. In the above cases my argument is effective shifting/allocation of troops. We'll continuously sacrifice soldiers lives needlessly if we can't make a decisive win on one front and then the other. Like Naploeon said,"A lost opportunity can't be gotten back." I believe the time for lots of troops in Iraq to make a difference is gone forever. Propoganda videos by the terrorists, showing IED attacks on western forces and Iraqi troops will endlessly recruit incited and hopeless-feeling young people to be suicidal bombers and mingle with Iraqi civilians to further incite religious strife- all in the name of making US policies there seem more horrific and further globally recruit al quaeda puppet groups to spring up. In short I'm saying militarily the terrorists have an endless supply of suicidal goons to fill their ranks and seem to be achieving a goal NOT to win in Iraq, but just keep wearing down the regular forces through attrition only and keeping a status quo showing that the US can't get a decisive victory there. I mean if 150,000 of the best troops in the world can't bring order there, do you really think an army of 300,000 so-so capable Iraqi troops can do it. True the US presence is staving off total chaos from breaking out but mentally the troops must be getting drained- making 2 or 3 tours must be sapping their hope. One tour is more than enough. I'd like to see Cheney do a tour- he's got a knack for shooting at people with a gun. Today 3 dozen potential Iraq army recruits lost their brave young lives to a suicide bomber. The situation has to change. What are your ideas? Hopefully a small US commision set to meet with Bush very soon has been to Iraq and may provide some very good answers to try and squash the violence.
