I just upgraded my video card. Went from a 64MB Nvidia MX-440 to a 128MB ATI Radeon 9600XT.
I just played online for the first time with it but am not able to notice any difference. I even increased my settings and so far I noticed nothing...if anything...the colors and textures didn't seem as smooth in the higher settings. I normally run in 1024x768...all colors 32-bit....all other settings on high (not higher or highest). Also, if anything my FPS is lower....old card avg is about 90 then drops to 20s and 30s when activity is around me.....new card avg seem to be 70-80 and I didn't notice what it dropped to when activity is around. I know there is a difference in the cards. I ran 3dMark01 (couldnt get the new versions to run without errors) and got a score of 3917 on Nvidia care and 11418 on the ATI card. Should I notice a difference? If so, could I get details as to what I should see? Why aren't my FPS increasing in the game...they did in 3dMark? Also, apart from games, should I see a difference in other proggies like photoshop or fireworks? Any input, help, or advice would be greatly appreciated. -------------------- ![]() "Difficulties come and they pass, but it is a shame that sometimes these difficulties must pass like diarrhea" |

XYZ,
There's no doubt you made a smart upgrade. That's a pretty good price for one of ATI's better cards, not their best however. The newer cards will set you back around $500.00. Moreover, the video card alone is not the only reason for fast gameplay. You must consider the ram, the processor, etc. When I rebuilt my computer recently, I switched to a P4-3.4, 512X2 DDR400, and the ATI 9800 XT. I could really tell the difference. Sincerely, ML |

I may be wrong but MOHAA may still be using settings from your old card.
Open up newconfig.cfg in the mohaa\main directory and see what it list. You may want to run confige.exe in the mohaa directory to update your settings. -------------------- Not a word was spoken to contradict or disagree with S@bot when he called me a....

Thanks guys (and gals)...input is appreciated and anymore input will be just as appreciated.
Just to add an addendum due to Mona Lisa's post, I have an AMD 2500+ (barton core) 1 gig of pc2700 RAM and an Albatron motherboard (via K400 chipset I think) AGP 8X. Druid--thanks man, I will try the config.exe. P--I simply don't see the eye candy...though I thought I would and I guess that's one reason I'm a little disappointed...but my FPS has seemed to dropped with the new card. Still somewhat confused but REALLY appreciate the input, advice and support for the new card. -------------------- ![]() "Difficulties come and they pass, but it is a shame that sometimes these difficulties must pass like diarrhea" |

Druid....newconfig.exe is not associated with any file type. How do I get it to reconfigure to my new card?
Configure.exe gives me these parameters: System Memory Range=1024MB (correct-my ram) CPU=1867Mhz (correct-my processor) Vid card type=ATI Radeon (correct) Vid card driver=Radeon 9600 (correct) Vid memory range=64MB (my new card is a 128MB) -------------------- ![]() "Difficulties come and they pass, but it is a shame that sometimes these difficulties must pass like diarrhea" |

Yeah anvil I could have gotten the 256 MB (9600XT not 9800pro) for $175 but was told that the extra 128 was NOT that big a a deal so I decided not to spend the extra $30.
I think I may have seen something!?!?!?!?!?!?! I noticed on DV today that I could see people behind trees/bushes a bit better. People that I could not see hiding before. Is that the kinda thing I will be noticing in the future? I was ultimately hoping to see people clearer on the other side of maps but I guess we can't have it all. -------------------- ![]() "Difficulties come and they pass, but it is a shame that sometimes these difficulties must pass like diarrhea" |

Well first of all you WON'T see huge changes in the FPS. If your FPS increase 10 frames then I would say thats outstanding. Also with your current CPU you really dont have the power to take advantage of all your video card's capabilities. Another thing, in order for you to see a CLEAR difference between your NVIDIAS card and your ATI you would need to compare the picture side by side. But from my current knowledge I can give you my word that the ATI can and does produce slightly higher quality picture.

I would reccomend running Driver Cleaner 3. This will remove registry entries for your old card. Then try reinstalling (Drivers) the ATI card and I will bet that you will see a difference. I think you were right on in using a synthetic benchmark like 3dmark for a performance difference guage.
I hope this helps. AOBTc -------------------- ![]() |
