Full Version: Do You Find This Sig Offensive?
{MOB} Forums > MOB Discussion Forum - PUBLIC > Sig Discussion/Requests/Test/Fan Art
Axel
Hey guys. I just wanted a preview on my new sig. I don't mean it in a racial way, it is just a part of southern culture and heritage. But I completely understand if someone doesn't like it. Just let me know and I'll be sure to make a new one. Thanks!

IPB Image

If you can't make out the text, it says 'The flag fades, but the pride stays.'

PLEASE NOTE: this is not meant in any sort of racist way or anything. It is a part of my southern culture not any radical beliefs.

If you find it inappropriate or offensive, please let me know!

Thanks for your understanding.

Hmmmmm, would this be considered a pickle?

I can see how it could be construed as racial and offensive to some, but (being that I live in North Carolina and spend a great deal of time in Louisiana) I can also see what you mean about "not meaning it in a racial way". Unfortunately, alot of folks who've never been to the States or below the Mason dixon line might not understand where your coming from.

I guess you ought to go with your gut reaction.

ummmm.

That's a really good question?Do you think maybe you could change that flag to our present flag the American Flag, which represents us all.The Confederate Battle Flag to many represents oppresion and slavery to many, and splits our country.I know that the North Carolina state capital flew that flag over its capital building and if you ask me that was Wrong. We live under one flag, the stars and stripes.

Just think if i had a sig with the Nazi broken cross,or pentagams all over the place.would you be offended?I just think its in bad taste, but thats only my oppinion.Yea it might look cool but i still would not use it to represent myself.

You asked and I answered, so all I ask is to think about how you may be perceived.

Heck I know a person who plays this game and will not even set foot on the CSA server specificaly because it use's the confederate battle flag as there representation.

im in the the south so i see them here and there most people are redneck around here. i did however have family who fought on the souths side but some people might look at it as a bad thing maby some people also had family in the war who were slaves and didnt enjoy it to much so i donno to me there is no south just the united states america. so im guess you would have more guns pointing at you then away from you on this one chief southern pride is fine but the flag might represent slavery and oppression to others think about it.not tryn to bash you just tryn to help you see it in a diff angle.

Ci.Ci.
Isn't this suppose to be the Free UNITED STATES,

I understand it both ways, I myself do not find it offensive as I live in all over the states and understand the south too.

The southern states has really both flags going for them. But keep in mind the other people who might take offense to it.

mobrules.gif After all this is a FREE COUNTRY.

I personally hate seeing the rebel flag, but I would never tell you that you couldn't fly it. That is why the US is great. And, I think that is why the MOB clan is great. Not everybody has to love your sig. But there is nothing "wrong" with it.
Just to let you know, I also don't judge you by having a rebel flag in your sig. I don't like the flag. It doesn't mean I presume to know you and by extension dislike you. I'm not that kind of person. Hell, I live in Dallas. I know plenty of proud southerners. I'm a proud Yankee.
That's about the extent of it.
We won the country back, you have a flag, lol, ;P
I hope none of that sounded hateful. It really isn't meant to be.

*edit* It's a really nice sig. I hope you keep it.

Its part of our history.I am sort of a civil war guy and most people dont even know what the civil war was really about.Did u know that Robert E. Lee was against slavery?

Thanks a lot for the info guys. I'm not at all offended by anyone's comments and I honestly appreciate it. I'm sorry for anyone that I may have offended, so as mentioned by The Mechanic, I am going to change the rebel flag to an American flag and will change the CSA troops in the foreground to now-a-day US troops in honor of their sacrifice and their service in Iraq, and around the globe.

Thanks for the input! biggrin.gif

I personally couldn't care less, but you should think about what it represents for most people or atleast how they associate it.

Yes, there is a historical background to the flag and yes, it was a major icon from Dukes of Hazzard, lol. But seriously, the swastika was originally an indian symbol and was adopted by the nazi party. Nowadays when people see a swastika, they don't think about indians... they assume it's a nazi symbol. In a similiar way, the rainbow flag. When I was young, people had flags of rainbows in front of their house and my sister and her friends had them all on their clothes and school supplies. Nowadays, people assume it's a gay thing(not that there's anything wrong with that).

So back to the Stars and Bars. Some people will argue that it's historical and it is... BUT... who adopted that flag after the Civil War??? Hmmm... I believe they're called the Ku Klux Klan and now similiar hate groups of Neo-Nazis. So there's my arguement... if you don't think that people associate the Stars and Bars with the KKK and Nazis, you should probably believe that the average person associates the swastika with American Indians as well.

Again, I could care less if you have it on here. Just showing what the average person might think though... so don't be surprised or get pissed off if people call you a bigot, racsist, or nazi. biggrin.gif
Cero
i like it, could care less what's on it. If it looks cool, go for it.
Axel
Alrighty. Thanks again for all the critique guys. After reading all these replies, I realize that a lot of people would probably judge me by it and potentially judge {MOB} and the forum administration for letting me keep a sig like that. So I guess it isn't really fair to everyone. I will be changing it as soon as I have the time.

Sincere Thanks,

Axel

You had to go there... dint ya. I will tell you there little missy, my lovely ladies make people feel good, I would be willing to bet, that if miss jiggly were at the front lines of most wars, people would stop shooting....imagine that a whole hord of them were running and then they got splashed with water and fell on top of eachother for a second and.... oops. got lost there for a bit.

My "ummm" reaction was to show my hypocracy to judge. I realize I took heat for my bouncy babes before, so who was I to judge, yet on the other hand, show me a place where boutiful bosoms are considered hurtful and I will show you a place that I must never go.

Love you sixie...

Wha? I haven't seen one of those yet. Wonder what that means, lol. I must get some for the dumbasses that park in front of my house. I've actually been conteplating what kind of sticker would be best. I was thinking NAMBLA would be good but then again, something that says something about their parking and rudeness to park right in front of my house or mailbox would be good. Rainbow handicap sticker, might have to check it out.

Thats not offencive at all to me. Hell, where I live people have those flags painted on their trucks!
pezking
OMG, I saw a truck TODAY painted w/the stars and bars on it while I was down in Richmond, VA. The funny thing was all the stickers that were also on the truck. Kind of defends my arguement on this earlier.

One sticker said, "heritage not hate"

but that was quickly followed by the one in the middle of the back window which was huge... it read,
"MLK, I had a dream too but when I woke up y'all were still here"

I mean, really... if that doesn't sum it up, I'm not sure what does. My personal thoughts are the image is about hate, whether is hate from 150 years ago or hate today. To me, the people that have these stickers or flags run in the same category as the people that fly the Nazi party or that Rev Phelps group that attends soldiers funerals and say "thank god for IEDs" and other stuff. Basically, they're looking for a shock reaction and I find it immature. What, the US flag isn't good enough for ya?
Axel
Ok. I have had time to think this over some more, and I have decided to use this as my sig. I have decided this because I feel that I have a right to do this without people judging me and the others around me by doing this. I know that this is contradictory to my previous post, but if you look around on the {MOB} forums, there are other things out and about that my be viewed as offensive. The women in the sigs/avatars, as mentioned above (I forget who mentioned that, sorry) I believe that would be considered a little more offensive than a flag. (Not that I don't like the women! dribble.gif Keep 'em coming.) But if you were to look at someone like IronCross's sig, he has Nazi emblems on it and I haven't heard anyone complain about that. Because Iron has swastikas and Nazi emblems on it, does that mean he is a Nazi? No. Because I have a rebel flag on my sig, does that mean that I am a KKK skinheaded freak? No. Just like in Iron's sig, the Nazi emblems represent a part of our history, albeit not a good part of our history, my sig represents a part of our history as well. The rebel troops of the 1860s were fighting for their country just as the Union troops were. Therefore they should be remembered/honored just as much as any federal troops. I also have ties to the Civil War in that many of my distant relatives were involved. Altogether, this sig is not meant in a racist/offensive way. I respect all comments and opinions of everyone, but I will leave on this final note: Yes, while some who raise the stars and bars believe in the racism and segregated ways of our past, others do not. Seeing that I am with the latter of the two, I believe that I should be able to show the rebel flag as a picture, and nothing more.

P.S. (sorry to drag you into this IronCross) And Pez, the American flag is more than good enough for me. And just to let you know, it flies proudly over my front step. smile.gif

THIS SIG IN NO WAY REPRESENTS HATE AND RACISM. IT IS A PICTURE AND NOTHING MORE!

It was directed at you completely, just the whole glob of the guys who have their cars covered in the confederate flag. Seriously though, I think it's gained it's infamous stature because of it's taboo nature. If you're really into the Civil War and into your family history, why not look up your state flag from the war or what flag your family carried. The stars and bars was not the official flag of the confederacy and if I remember correctly, used most often by Texan troops. Again, I think it has been marketed as THE flag of the confederacy and the south by people making a buck and the fact that it's taboo and shocking to a lot of people makes it cool. Also, an Iron Cross and a swastika are two different things. It's like comparing a purple heart to a regiment flag.
Angus Thermopyle
Honestly (as a northerner whose family history had a very prominent role in the events leading up to the Civil War) I associate the confederate flag with racism. Would I ever assume you were a racist, I hope not but the temptation would still be there.

As for the swastikas, I equate them with the Nazi party and hate groups as well. I realize that some people here have them in honor of the game itself which is based upon WWII, so I am a little more accepting of them within boundries.

Do I object to both? YES. Would I call you out on it, no.

Just my two pence.

Well put. If you don't like my 420x180 pixel square, then you need to man up and quit complaining. It isn't a big deal, and it is staying up until a member of {MOB}, [Regs], or someone with some authority asks me to remove it, or until I decide that it is time for me to make a new one.

I like the sig. I love Southern pride and I don't like racism. You can fly that flag with pride without being a racist. My father-in-law is a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans because he simply loves the South; he is by no means a racist. It seems like a lot of folks in America are trying to find something to get offended over.

I agree that the world is too pc nowadays, but we're also not pc enough at times. Also, quick edit on my previous post, meant to say that the thread WASN'T directed completely at Axel. I'm not really offended by the image, but I am empathatic to others and can understand why they would be concerned by it. Would you be concerned if you saw some neo-nazi dudes hanging out at your local 7-11? They'll say that it's not about hate, just they like WWII Germany and the historical side of it so it's okay to wear swastikas. German did it right man... after the war they made it illegal to have swastikas on anything. Again, I'm not offended by the Civil War historical part of the Stars and Bars, but the fact that it was adopted as the flag for the KKK... come on. Maybe you guys in the south should rise up against the KKK and make them change their flag so your heritage symbol isn't one of hatred. But please stop acting like nobody should have anything to say about it. I get that all the time in Richmond and I debate those guys for hours about it. They keep w/the same old "historical" theme in the debate till they finally get frustrated and throw out the N word a few times and my case is at rest.

Here's a good arguement. Think Black Panthers. Would it be okay for a bunch of black people to have flags, stickers, shirts w/Black Panthers on them and possibly a gun rack or two in their car? Would you be concerned for your safety? What about an Iraqi Fahadeen flag? Don't say it doesn't count cause it's not this country because the people that fly the Stars and Bars still seem to think the South Will Rise Again and consider themselves seperate from the Union.

PS - The war is over, y'all lost.
Cpt. Snot Rocket
I'm not offended. I just think using the American flag is much better.
Shred and Burn
Here's my take.

I am not offended by the sig. And my opinion of Axel won't change no matter what he has as a sig.
I could give a rats ass. Even if it did offend me, I wouldn't give Axel crap for it.

Personally, I do not like the flag.
If my neighbor were to hang it outside in the evening, it would be gone in the morning.

But hey I'm a Yankee !!

However, I know that it is a symbol of pride for Southerners. And as you know, I have a lot of cool buds in this clan that are southerners.

Bottom line, this is MOB clan. This clan has an edge. Just look at what M.O.B. means !

And I like that we have an edge. Get whatever sig you want.

You watch too much T.V. Either that or you've never actually met someone from the south. There may be a couple hundred numbnuts who actually think the south is going to rise again. They are probably all related. Closely. Does that fit the picture? Call their Uncle "Pa". That's actually funny you think that. Whoah, I'm not trying to fight or argue anyone on this. I thought it was an interesting topic and gave my opinions on the question asked in the thread title. I live on the line, Northern Virginia where I pass about 10 Civil War monuments or battlefields on my 15 min commute to work everyday. I went to college in Richmond (capital of the Confederacy) for 8 years at two different schools for two different degrees. I'm very familiar with the south and some of the idiots that live there. Believe me, I've been through this debate several times and have argued both sides. My posts have all been a "food for thought" thing and I have stated that I don't really have any issues w/the sig. I will stick with my beliefs that most of the people that flaunt that flag are doing it for shock value, trying to stir stuff up with people... but oh well, to each their own. I also agree with your statement earlier "I think if you had to ask the question you already have your answer" as it speaks volumes.
flatliner
SInce I have been mentioned indirectly here, lets stay on topic, and look at this from another perspective....

A few months ago, it was mentioned that certain avatars be removed due to their violent and/or sexual nature. The debate then, was that we are playing a game based on violence, and thet it was hypocritical to encourage violence in the games, yet on the forums, that support said gaming, we are offended by CLOTHED breasts. The debate then turned to, the ability for one to turn off their avatars/sigs. Doing something noble, which is rare for me, since it OFFENDED a small portion of the clan, I removed my avatar. I did not fight it, and I certainly would not have done it this way...

If you don't like my 420x180 pixel square, then you need to man up and quit complaining. It isn't a big deal, and it is staying up until a member of {MOB}, [Regs], or someone with some authority asks me to remove it, or until I decide that it is time for me to make a new one.

[color=#FFFFFF]
Following that, I was asked by several members of the clan to put up not only my original avatar, but it was asked that I rotate different avatars to keep it fresh. There was no 3 page debate on this, and it was open for all to see. Not one person who originally had an issue with it sent me a PM, spoke to me on vent, or posted any follow ups to the choice. I have not had anyone mention that they were offended or bothered by it and by all means, there has been plenty of time for anyone to do so.

So, AXEL, since you TWICE used the same quote to back up your point (the same point you have changed your mind on a few times in the same thread) I feel your responses were directed in my general direvtion. I was going to leave it alone until you posted your lovely submission above.

Here is the bottom line from MY perspective. I dont care about your flag, or your sig. I can see past that. It haa been stated by a few members of mob and regs that they A. find it offensive yet support your right to use it, and B. believe you knew it would be offensive to some or you would not have had to ask. I have an issue with the way you stated your point in the post above. Please, pretty please, do not come in here and try and piss all over the place. We have several resident "pissers" and are in no need of anymore.

Sorry Flat. Didn't mean to single you or anyone else out like this. Seeing that I have played with {MOB} and the [Regs] for a long time starting in MoH:AA (granted I have had long absences) and am currently an *MR* trying to join [Regs], I am not here to make enemies or step on toes. I decided to put the sig up because many people encouraged me or were indifferent about it. I respect everyone's opinions, but seeing that no one to my knowledge told me directly "do not put that sig up, it offends me" I decided to go ahead and do it. I'm sorry for any drama, toe stepping on, or any other bullshit that I may have caused. I would really like it if everyone just dropped the subject and this thread was deleted before it becomes an issue that could come to hurt someone's feelings (I'm truly sorry if I did hurt someone's feelings, it was unintentional) or cause bruised egos. I'm sorry that this thread turned out the way it did, it was certainly not supposed to turn into a bashing of anyone.

Thanks for your understanding. And again, I'm truly sorry for pissing anyone off or starting any B.S. or drama.

Hey Axel, I wouldnt worry about it too much. With a clan this size almost anything you do or say is going to offend or irritate someone. You didnt do anything out of line. There have been somethings going on that that have nothing to do with you that have everyone on edge. Put up the sig take down the sig no matter. Had you not said anything it would have gone unnoticed had I to guess. Lets just move on and go back to playing the game where everyone can agree to have fun.
