Full Version: Opinions on switching from Vent to Teamspeak

As everyone is probably already aware, we recently made some changes on our ventrilo server.
The main reason for the switch was to allow MAC users to access vent.
The down side of this has been several users have had nothing but problems since the switch.
The most common are, constant disconnects/reconnects & some people can only hear certain people while other can't.
Mike & I have spent a lot of time trying to find and answer or fix to solve these issues.
So far, we've had little or no luck. The chance of solving these problems seem to be nil.
Right now we have two options left to us.
1) Switch the server back to how it was, which may or may not solve the problem. Personally I don't like this option as it would leave MAC users behind.
2) Dump Ventrilo and change to a TeamSpeak server.
The reason we originaly went with Ventrilo over teamspeak 2+ years ago, is because the sound quality on TS was junk.
With the last few updates, TS now offers the same sound quality as Ventrilo.
Also TS now supports MAC clients, so there won't be any problems with leaving some users behind.

What I would really like to know is if there is anyone currently using TS who has problems with it?
Please limit responses to people who are using the current TS version, not problems you may of had with older versions as they have problably been fixed in an update.

Each platform has it's own pro's an con's
For me the biggest plus with TS over Vent is, Teamspeak uses UDP which has much lower packet overhead compared to Ventrilo's TCP implementation.
The single Ventrilo ability I will miss is how it announces who joins the server or channel. TS only announces when a player joins but not WHO joins like Vent.

Thoughts?

Im fine with the change if needed I've used TS in the past and never had any problems with it.

Sounds good to me. ClanServers offers TS as a choice so there wouldnt be any charge to run TS. I've never really had any problems with TS.

Could we run both Vent and Teamspeak for a while to see how it works? My biggest concern is the lag time from speaking until people can hear you. If we are in a game and the voice lags more than Vent, then it would be a big disadvantage.

Also, running both Vent and Teamspeak for a while might ease the transition. By the way, the extra Vent server is also helping when the disconnect/reconnect problem becomes disruptive. We've played the last couple of scrims using it.

I haven't had any problems with TS except for some choppy sounds while in game when I first starting using it. That problem was fixed when I changed the sound driver from Wave to Direct Sound.

Forgot to add that I've used the Linux version of TS too, and it worked great.

I am with Mike on this lets try'em both

Ive used ts before and it was ok the voices are kinda digital sounding tho

If the sound quality wasn't good it's because the codec the server was setup to use.
We'll be using one with the same sound quality we currently have on vent.

Before making the switch on clanservers, I plan on seting a copy up on our server for a week or two so we can insure TS is going to work for everyone.
Then once we know for sure, I'll have clanservers change vent to TS.

I plan on setting up the TS server Tuesday or the next day at the latest.

I've used both, no issues with either one. I really like how Vent can tell you who joined the channel, and you can customize how your name "speaks" when you join the channel.

Any word from the Ventrillo folks on getting a new version out? (Since we're running beta...) Are the Ventrillo forums full of people having issues with the new setup?

Druid there is a program I used called TeamSpeak Overlay, which in game shows you who joined or left and is currently talking.

Its completely adjustable including text size.

Also if I remember correctly there is one more program like this and it also supports VENT called TSDisp.
Druid
thanks scar, that takes care of my only concern about going to TS.

Then it'd be awkward having TS only for one when i have about 10 vent servers... anyway, guess i could give it a try...
