I've been looking at binds today in the Ventrilo help file (Ventrilo/doc/binds.htm in your Ventrilo folder). Using the binds allows you to configure (4) different PTT (push-to-talk) methods:

1) Talk in current channel. Exactly the same as the default PTT key setup. This is what everyone is used to.

2) Talk in a specific channel. This allows you to send voice to another channel. For example, if you are playing in a large-scale match (10v10 or 15v15) where your team is split across multiple channels, you can send voice to the commander channel by using this key bind. Also useful for splitting into axis/allies on the pub servers, yet still being able to talk to people in the root channel (i.e. Tuchola Forest).

You can also transmit to up to 4 channels simultaneously.

3) Talk in a specific channel AND all sub-channels. Very useful for large matches. This allows axis to talk to allies or defenders to talk to attackers in the other channel. Also allows transmitting in up to 4 different channels (and their sub channels).

4) User-to-user - Somewhat useful, but limiting. Could be used for 2-5 person squads as it allows up to 4 targetnames for the chat.

---------------------------------------------------------------

The latest Ventrilo also adds key binds that allow you to switch channels.

1) Switch to a particular channel name (enter the name in the channel name field or pick-n-choose).

2) Switch to the first sub channel (the magic name "Child" in the channel name field).

3) Switch between parallel channels (i.e. to switch between axis/allies), use the magic name "Next" in the channel name field.

4) Move up to the parent channel (magic name: "Parent")

5) Move to the Lobby (magic name: "Lobby")

---------------------------------------------------------------

Useful settings that aren't defaults:

1) Setup - Misc tab

a) Silent Blank Comments - this should probably be turned on
b) Silent connections when in a channel - if you feel spammed by all of the connect/disconnect messages when on the server, you should turn this option on.
c) Play comments when: Same current channel - This keeps you from being spammed by comments when you are not in a particular channel

2) Setup - Events

a) Comments - you may want to switch this to "Text-to-speech"

I've been wondering if there was a way to talk to other channels. This would be perfect for match play especially for 8v8 or more. But even for 6v6, depending on how you have your strats set up, it could really cut back on interfereing team chatter. If you only need to talk to your wing man, then you hit that channel. If you need an overall call for defence or cover at a base, then you hit the universal button. If you are broken into 3 pairs and want the one of the other 2 pairs to know that you are in position, you speak directly to them. If you are a scout/sniper you can tell a specific person there is a threat near them.
This keeps all the other people from having to talk over each other and lets the game sounds come thru more clearly which is sometimes essential, like when you are listening for a satchel or wondering where that sniper shot came from or wondering which tank is being stolen, etc.
