My Oct06 PC Gamer mag just arrived in the mail. On the disk
was the Company of Heros beta demo with a nice article on
the game in the mag. They rated it a 96% and after I did some
looking at the basic training on the demo, it really looks quite good.
When I get some more time, I will finish the training and get into
the game a bit more. This game might just be all that it can be...

Stryker9
OK, just finished all 4 tutorials. This is probably the best RTS game I
have seen in a while. I just may have to pick this one up when it hits
the shelves...

The people over at "Fry's Electronics" tell me that COH
will be in their store this coming Thursday about noon.
They will be offering a $10. discount off the list price.
It should be available in CD or DVD format....

just saw the comercial tonight and its out the 24th here cross!
pezking
Ya, I saw the commercial during the game last night... looks pretty cool. Reminds me of MOH for some reason.
Druid
I know what you mean.
There was a screenshot of a church that made me think of the one in Destroyed Village.
One of the rockets ones was stright out of V2, plus the beach head in Omaha.

Games sounds interesting, but I can't believe the game is going to look as good as those screenshots did.
UNDEAD 1
yes when first commenting on this game i had another in mind(sorry) but i got a good glimpes while working last night.funny im sitting there staring at the tv saying to myself wow, that looks good! i wonder what the mp is like-then i realized i was in the middle of making a marg and the womans looking at me for like 5 min while i was oblivious.

pezking
Not sure if the game will look that good. I just read an article in EGM about commercials misleading consumers, especially with video games now. They were showing screenshots from the CoD2 commercial vs the game. Seems it's the new spackle now. biggrin.gif
Lord Lipton

Was in Best Buy yesterday and read the out side of the BOX it requires 6.5 Gig of uncompressed hard drive space.Made me laugh I remember when my hard drive was 25 megs. I will most likely get it this week end..In the late 60's when I was in the service I use to play games like this but they were board games. Its like a different type of chess match.
Big P
Overall this game ROCK! Will post SS later

i ask this again.

Stryker9
I just picked up my DVD copy of COH today.
Will be getting into some playing of it tonight.
Hope to have a multiplay game going before
too long...

It's a good game though I have to say I don't like skirmishing with the AI much on open maps. I find them realy difficult to contain. Mainly as the AI has the advantage in organizing and ordering its units around on the map and it likes to split up its units early on and go capturing and harrasing you in your territory while securing its own. You just cant compete with the AI's efficency.
This is the reason I rarely ever play this type of RTS game. On multiplayer it should be better because humans tend to
take more time and think things out....

JIM
Genocide Junkie
So this is a strategy game and not a FPS?
Stryker9
I would call it a Strategy + FPS game. You must study the map,
find out your best options in attack & defend. Then pick your
troops, build different buildings in the best places, wait for your
army types to be organized and THEN, deploy them all (one at a
time) to where you think they should be. This probably takes a
human player 3-4 minutes if you know exactly what to do. It
probably takes the AI about 90 seconds because it can all happen
almost at once. So time, not AI is your worst enemy !!
So you see, this game can be a lesson in frustration....

JIM

PS. And that is on the EASY computer AI setting.
Big P
Jim we need to play lan togetter and i'll show how to beat AI
Cpt. Snot Rocket
I will admit up front that I have not played the game but it reminds me of a re-energized 'Command and Conquer' RTS game.

Can't see any way it could be called an FPS.

Th review makes it promising. I know what you mean by the 'time' struggle against the AI, Jim. Many games have had this problem.
-priority(+)target-
I am a BIG RTS fan! If you guys are putting a game together, let me know!!!

Stryker9
In my previous post, I said FPS but meant to say RPS.
It is NOT an FPS game. Big P, I have not really done much
playing with COH. Gotta learn the ropes better and know which
building to use to greater efficency. If you could drop into an
FPS mode by picking out a squad, I would be MUCH more interested.
I read about a game coming that you can do just that. Don't remember
the name but that will be the one I will really like....

Here is a quote from a player on another forum about COH:

"I am hooked on playing skirmish mode...I played as the Germans recently and built 2 Nerbelwerfers and moved them into a secure area. Flanks were protected by MG42 units and puma and the rear was protected by s unit of Grenadiers and a Stug. I was able to rain havoc on my AI opponent it was really cool.....................Until he brought in an airstrike (strafing) and an artillery barrage that ruined my party."
Genocide Junkie
So this is War Craft for WWII Junkies....
Stryker9
OK, took a much closer look at this game for about 2 hours of skirmish play.
The doc book is wholly inadequate in my opinion. I learned much that was
NEVER in the book. I quickly found out that the "pause" key is probably the
most important of all for the human player. Using it very frequently, I managed to
keep up with the AI somewhat (still on EASY setting). I got most of my buildings
done before any incursion by the Germans. I even got some tanks & armored cars
built among some other useful things. Found out that all the fuel & munitions depots
are NOT the same. Some are worth more that others (not in the book). Also some
weapons are not listed in the book either. At one point, I saw a red dot moving on
the map towards my MG squad. Upon closer examination, I see this little robot tank?
moving towards me. All of a sudden, it blows up taking my MG squad with it. Didn't
know that we had robots in WW2??? The gun was intact so I had an Engineer squad take
it over which they did to my surprise. I used arty on a German bunker which worked very
well and followed up with a tank, armored car & inf squad. Ran into fierce resistance from
a German tank & infantry. Held my own till a 2nd German tank showed up. It maneuvered
over too my flank where I had my 57 anti-tank gun do the honors. My little anti-tank crew
ended up taking out 3 German tanks (nice shooting). I ended up losing but not by much.
Of course, the lessons I learned for the next time were priceless. So the moral here is:
1. Use the "PAUSE" key very, very often.
2. Use the save option if needed. ( I didn't that game)
3. If there is a cheat code, use for ACE up the sleeve.

JIM
Stryker9
Next step: I started a skirmish with an allied AI set to "hard"
2 German AI's set to "easy". The resources (3 of them) were
building well but I was the only one using them. From what I
saw, none of the AI used them at all, not even my allied AI team?
So my question is: What is the AI using for resources? Are they
getting them out of the blue? I see nothing in the docs that
explain this. My allied AI Engineers go out and get them but don't
use them. Is the human player the only one these resources listed
are to be used by? What is the formula used by the AI for its resources?

JIM
Stryker9
OK, me & my AI team WON one for a change. I found out that my
Allied AI went after certain goals so I just filled in where he/it left
holes. It worked out quite well. Denying the enemy AI every fuel
depot I could proved to be beneficial. I only saw 3 German tanks
in 42 minutes of play. I artyed 2 of them and had a Sherman +
anti-tank gun get the third. Germans built 2 - 88 gun emplacements
which I promptly artyed. They really brought out the anti-tank guns
in large numbers but I countered with arty, riflemen and flame-thrower
engineers. I had more kills than all 3 of the AI players. The trick, like I
said before, is to use the pause key very often. It tends to even the
playing field between human and AI....

JIM

Commander Stryker9!

I think I'll download the demo and check it out... hey that being said, what is the multiplayer like?

Stryker9
I have not tried MP as yet but it can take up to 8 players.
