Took a long time for the moment to come about didn't it. I can only assume Bush kept Rumsfeld more out of not wishing to make himself showing weakness on his policies and cling to the need he felt to look loyal, steadfast andnot a quitter. Rumsfeld had offered to resign twice - as early as 2004.... Bush CHOSE not to accept it. Rumsfeld supporters are a bit mind-boggling, acting shocked and disappointed-oblivious to the fact Rumsfeld only stays on the job out of a sense of duty. Too little too late Bush. Some repubs wish you'd booted Rumsfeld long before the election. Let's see how replacement Bob Gates invigorates the 'new' course.
