Today's congested networks and poor routing have started to dampen competitive gaming because of the high ping/latency. Consider what is possible based on the simple physics of light travel:

Light travels aprox 8ms/1000 miles in fiberoptic cable (Internet's backbone medium)

Round trip distance from Chicago to Dallas = 1600 miles
Minimum possible ping = 15 ms.

Round trip distance from Chicago to UK = 8000 miles
Minimum possible ping = 64 ms.

Even adding 10 to 15 ms to get out of the local client & server area, this would be quite an improvement.

To get much closer to these numbers, a new service is being started:

Could be interesting.

Did anyone sign up for the beta version of this yet?? Looks very interesting. I wonder how it will affect you if you have a router?

I signed up on the website, 6pak. Though, I think by signing up you just get put in a lottery for people who may be used to beta test.
