Yea, from what I have seen it looks like there are 31 dead. How horrible! What the hell could cause this piece of shit to do something like this?

How scary and sad.
It is truely a dark day.
Man what does it say about the state of mankind, I just dont get what could make someone snap like that. I truelysend my condolences and prayers to the familys and friends
What a tragedy! Why do they sell arms to all kind of people. Arms induce death and tragedy to the humankind, family lose their dear ones, they can't be replace. God be with their family, and i think we all should pray for the family who lost their child.
I'm surprised that schools havn't up'd security, I mean The Colombine shooting a few months ago was evidence enough that it might happen again. I mean Couldn't these Universities and High school and even middle schools have Metal detectors and have More than just security guards around who ask if you are skipping class?
A few weeks ago at my school, "G. Holmes Braddock Senior High" Some random guy came into the school and tried to Stab some kid. The kid was smart enough to run away, and the guy was eventually caught by School police in the area at the time and sentenced to 2 yrs in Juvie. We were later told that The kid actually got himself into a fight with this kid and had lost humiliatingly. He wanted revenge and just ran in at lunch to get it.
I mean Just having a simple Metal Inspection might not solve everything but well, It might reduce these accidents and stuff.
The weird thing about this shooting was that the guy came early and shot 2 people and left...2 hours later he came and shot 30 more Including himself. Why didn't the school just cancel classes?
Either way this is some really messed up stuff.
I don't if someone has intent to do harm like that to anyone not much will stop them,2 people have been stabbed with pens and pencils at my school.

Even if he obtained the firearm legally, which I doubt very much that he did, he would have gotten his hands on a gun somehow. It doesn't matter how many laws you make against having a gun, if someone wants to shoot someone, they will find a gun.

I'll be damned if I would go to a university with metal detectors all over campus. I pay enough for tuition already without them upping the cost because of the very very small chance that at the specific time I am on campus someone is going to go on a killing spree. Don't get me wrong, I feel for the friends and families of the kids that were murdered in this tragic event, but the chance of this happening to you or me is very slim.

Security at universities is especially difficult. There are so many buildings and so much ground to cover, especially at big schools like Virignia Tech. Having security checkpoints in every single building would be impractical. In reality, a big campus has to operate like a small town with its own police force. Of course, most university police forces can't do a lot to prevent or deal with issues like this.
Thanks Rush. That was something I meant to put in my post but forgot to do it.

If we are going to worry about an item that kills people every day en masse lets ban tobacco. It kills and wounds millions more than a gun ever could. All laws really do is keep honest people honest. The wacko's who do this crap are going to do it with a gun, a knife, or a wet noodle if that's what it takes. They are just messed up. A tragedy like this is going to happen every few years like it or not. We just pray instead of hundreds or thousands that they are stopped early and loss is minimized. I have a closet full of guns and havent shot anyone.... YET.

Yeah man, you were the first person I thought of when that broke this morning. Being in Northern VA, George Mason, VCU, and VA Tech are the schools that everyone goes to around here. Almost all my friends went there, including my sister... it's just weird. I've spent too much time down in Blacksburg myself. This whole thing is just really close to home, not in the literal sense. I even went to pick up my chinese food tonight and the owner was telling me about how his daughter goes to school there. Just a messed up situation and ofcourse the media, atleast around here, are trying to point fingers to blame the school or the law enforcement... just trying to turn this into another Katrina situation. Pisses me off. Let's not worry about stopping this and treating the people that have been affected, we need someone to blame besides the deranged person who shot all the people.
And of course good ol' Jack Thompson is already blaming video games. For those of you who don't know who he is, a quick search will show you what a moron that man is.
I'm not trying to belittle the event, but this is how I now react to things like this...
I saw this on TV while working (hours after it happened, but that's how I found out).
In the second shot it appeared to be snowing. I said out loud "how weird is that, snow in Virginia in April". It was only a few minutes later that I realised how messed up that was. I'm not a shallow or callous person, but in this day and age when you see things on TV, the impact is different. At least, maybe to me.
how many copy cats will we see because every channel ,including the food network, will show this 24 hours a day.
So we were watching more updates on this on local news last night. The news guy is interviewing a student and the kid is talking about how great the school, local, and federal authorities have handled the situation... from the beginning. As he was explaining, the reporter kept interrupting him and saying stuff like, "are you sure, cause you're telling me there was a good 15 minutes where you weren't being communicated with by the school or police." Give me a break. Why does the media expect... maybe people too, expect to have their hand held through every crisis. The situation sucks ass, but shit happens and the school or police don't have a pause button for life.

Of course, being up here in Quebec and us having the campus shooting spree recently my first reaction was 'Will it never end'. Again my initial reaction was to round-up and destroy all these whackos without trial before they can strike. But then I get back to my initial thought and how mankind can stop obliterating each other callously. Apparently they're finding out this 'guy' Cho Seung Hui-who did the shooting had written hate laced stories. One thing these 'people' seem to have in common is bruised warped egos. So I wonder if its not a case of money being the root of evil, but f**'d up egos being the worst culprit for all of man's worst crimes. I'm glad we're [education system] 'starting' to make inroads in getting kids to adjust to critical stages in their lives, but I hope our whole society, and globally we can catch and 'pacify' the ones who slip through the cracks in time before they flip out insanely.
Anyway here's a link that might help us understand what's going on with these tragic acts of insanity; I wish it could be the last.
http://news.sympatico.msn.ctv.ca/Common+th...ct=&abc=abcps.I know what you mean BarG,.... up here we more or less got back into normal mode as a city within a week. In one way its telling these maniacs even though they created a hideous event, the people won't let their way of normal life be held hostage are damaged no further.
Yes I agree with you 6-pak; even though we don't know the full story yet [apparently recent previous bomb threats at the school taught them how to go in lockdown mode] there was apparently a lapse in immediate lockdown. I'm not sure, but they say maybe chiang/shooter made the previous bomb threats to test the enforcement response - or was it to give a false sense of security so that people on campus would believe it was a false alarm and proceeded normally when initial reports came in.Fortunately the Dawson Campus up here [in theQuebec shooting spree] was 'small' so a search for the rapid reacting fast thinking cops up here zoomed in on the shooter very fast.
