My friend and I are planing to go to Amsterdam by next year, anyone here know of any good websites to look for good deals on air flight + hotel for 1 week trip?

Or if someone was there befor, any infor you can share be helpful.

Kleerance
Holland is the most liberal country in Europe. Cannabis is legalised and the "red-light-district" is well known......Actually it's freaky stuff - they have a menu at these "coffee shops" with Marihuana and Hasjisj on the menu........ blink.gif Therefore they also have the highest percentage of drug users in Europe. You'll see them in any central railwaystation. When I was in Rotterdam 13 years ago there was a big fight at the central station....probably drugrelated..One man was beaten unconcious by a couple of others.

So my advice, Don't stay longer than you have to on these "congregation-spots" for such people like the down-town central station. (And don't wear a Feyenoord scarf in Amsterdam - they'll kill ya tongue.gif )

In addition, those places can be fun but like Kleerance said they do attract some unsavory characters. Watch you bags and your wallets for pickpockets. We got an email at work aboutan employee who was on a train in Amsterdam, someone walked by a dropped so me change or something then while he was helping that person another person took his laptop bag. By the time he looked up they were all off the train and he was up shit creek. So have fun but be alert and don't carry anything you couldn't replace.

And of course, in the redlight district, err...ah...how shall I say.... "double bag it!".

For all you soccer moms out there, that mean's put your peanut butter sandwich into two bags, just to be sure that if you drop it, it is OK. smile.gif

Seriously, you should have lotsa fun.

Amsterdam is a great city!
I have been there three times, and I have never experience any problems.
But remember that after dark a lot of people will try to get your money in different ways - lol

Sights you should cover: (in the order you want)
Anne Franks house
Rijksmuseum
Red Light District (just look - lol)

Maybe you can find a hotel here:

I was in Amsterdam for 5 glorious days once. What a fantastic town. In the daylight it is very beautiful with great architecture and these little canals all over the city. By night the freaks come out and it is a combination of Mardi Gras , a Dead show, and the crack house on the corner.

Must Dos:

The Cheech and Chong Tour ( See "Up In Smoke")

Sit in the Red Light District at a cafe, and watch the asian tour groups come down the street as all the men peel off into the hooker closets

The Sex Museum- The front door is a giant vagina. i finally found one that fit. LOL

Eat awesome waffles in the morning.

Beat up the gypsy kids who try to pickpocket you

Things you can skip:

Anne Franks house- BORING!!!!!! $10 to get in, walk around this tiny house with no furniture in it that has brass plaques on the wall saying " THis is the living room, this is where Ann slept" Complete waste of money and time.

Smuggling drugs out of Amsterdam- big No No, the cops have machine guns and very large dogs. I don't recommend you try this and don't ask me how I know.

I had a great time and would love to go back. %v days was plenty because i needed to detox for a month after that 5 days. have a good time.

Well it's not Disney World, but that isn't the point either......................

I agree Norwegian, it isn't supposed to be "entertaining" but when i was there it was pretty spartan, ie bare rooms with the brass plaques. I am a huge WWII buff and read The Diary of Anne Frank. irealize what she went through. i guess I was a bit disappointed at what I got to see for my money. please realize this european vacation of mine was funded by many trips to the plasma bank and several thousand wheelbarrow loads of wet concrete hauled by yours truly. Parting with that hard earned money was difficult.

I have traveled in Europe four separate times and I am always amazed at how much history there is to see. i have even been to your fine country once. I biked through the Lofoten islands for a week and then visited Oslo. A beautiful city. I was very intrigued with the city park that had all the statues, The obelisk in the center composed of all the people was very interesting. i also read that many citizens of Oslo are not as impressed with the staues as I was. Is this true?

i hope i didn't offend you with my Anne Frank cooments. it was not intended.

Very cool to hear that you have visited Norway, and especially North Norway, Cowdoc. The Lofoten islands is really something. Maybe you visited Tromso as well, it is Rommel, Kleerance and my native town, and maybe the host for the Winter Olympics 2018?

Now my office is next to the city park with all the statues in Oslo. And I think that everyone in Oslo are impressed with the statues. Btw - it is a story about how Gustav Vigeland got the idea for the obelisk with all the people on top of each other ("Monolitten"). He was in Scotland and in a city centre a guy tossed a coin high up in the air, and then suddenly he saw the model of "Monolitten"................ biggrin.gif

And I didn't get offenden at all with your Anne Frank comments. I can understand your point in the first post. It is not a good idea to visit her house with a nasty hangover! laugh.gif
