I'm not joking here, hell. I downloaded CIV Play the World like 2 or 3 years ago off the net for free.
I love the game.

Where have you been?

ohhhhh- lol, stuck in cod UO world too much due to finances - methinx I lost touch with how to do those innovative searches for free stuff.
Well what the hell- I may pay $10 anyway for the boxed version- help the economy stay north of the looming recession. tongue.gif

So I splurged and got the game - actually it was CIV 3.
I installed it and memories of fun with CIV 1 came back.
Actually it was more than I expected.... it was destructively too addictive ; I mean it terms of how fast time flies while you play and then keep going for 'just one more turn' endlessly ->>> the last thing self-employed peeplez want is something too time consuming to do on the side.
It lasted four days on my comp then I uninstalled it. I'm sad I did but glad I did at the same time. I mastered one of my flaws -this time.

You were warned; be prepared- by the time you break away from playing it you'll realize you have a full beard, hairy ears, and won't remember barring your door to lock people out.

damn damn damn - I installed it again sad.gif

but I'm getting pretty good.... I got backstabbed last night by the Babylonians. There I was filthy rich and Allied with them who had a huge empire surrounding me. Safe was I thought I.... no need to build any military -just get rich and buy advances.... War erupts between Babylon and France.... I don't have a world map and do not realize France is across the gulf in obscured mapland.. never mind says I, I'll go along with a pre-agreed military pact with Babylon and declare war on France.... well Babylon had a crappy navy compared to France who slices through the gulf with a tiny invasion force and overruns by spear wielding mini-garrisons embaressingly easily with mere knights -one knight per city!!!! The match was quickly exited to avoid further humiliation. I will seek revenge on Persians from now on at every opportunity.

Lesson for you Bargod if you are indeed getting the game to overindulge in it, forewarn your wife and kids that you'll unexpectedly be cursing+crying out to the gods of CIV mocking you while you play.

The secret is to choose a society that is both religious and militaristic. Religious because when you change forms of government chaos only lasts one turn and militaristic because units are built faster.
That's my humble oppinion, of course.
Hellfighter
hey BG did you buy it?
Actually I'm playing with Zulus lol...... very interesting. The game concept in CIV 3 does refiect actual empires historical 'trends' but you do have the opportunity to change things up nicely in the game if you aren't bogged down militarily. My zulu empire was on a small island so I ended up putting mines in every available land spot! I bought most of my advances with my hordes of accumulating cash including the republic.... if all had gone smoothly without treachery I'm sure I could've come out on top .... I was playing at medium difficulty
Bargod
No, haven't bought it yet. I was just giving advice based on the last two versions I played. Oddly, one wasn't made by Sid and had some interesting things going for it, but ultimately sid's version won me over.
I was just assuming things would be fairly similar to previous versions.

Now that you mention this other stuff it becomes even more enticing!!

The characters of the nations are done nicely - I can't believe its been 7 years since its been out though... I clearly remember thinking it's a gotta have game when it first appeared and had some disposable income to splurge on games. I also clearly remember running for cover because of sniper fire and a little kid reading poems in the chaos of the shopping trip....... huh.gif

OK Bar.... alert;
I uninstalled Civ 3. Something in it really made be be done with it for good.
It's called deposition! If you have a thumb of land with a city sticking into enemy territory and no matter how advanced it is or militarily pumped up defensively it is you WILL have to kiss it goodbye. At some point in time, the game mechanics suddenly decides that city is enemy influenced and without warning changes into an enemy city- ie, of the nation you were jutting into!
Amazing BS - its like Pearl Harbour suddenly turning Japanese, or Hong Kong, or Gibraltar switching to the enemy nation /land surrounding/next to it. In essence its manipulating your play... forcing you to make sure you expand your territory in a neat line.... it sucks!

But I do have my eye on CIV 4 now..... huh.gif

They have something like that in civ2 as well. Generally if your culture is greater than your neighbors (or vice versa) then a city may revolt and ask to join your country. Usually my cities don't leave me, but I'll build Wonders near cities I want to win over.
