Know someone in college? Most students get an extreme discount on XP. I heard of a student getting it for $10 a copy. Otherwise find an administraters copy (corporate).

If your wife can't get an on-campus discount, try this link where they offer a student discount.

At Frys Electronics (Outpost.com on the web) you can just buy the XP OEM for $99.00; you don't even have to buy anything else. Forget about Win98.

That's probably the upgrade version (home edition)...which is ok if you already have an earlier version of windows.

If it's not, then they are REQUIRED to sell it with a piece of hardware. You may get lucky if they sell it without the hardware but they are not supposed to. But hell, pick up spare powersupply, cd-rom, (something cheap) or that hard drive you need.

If you can get the education discount, also try JourneyEd. You can get the XP Pro Upgrade for $99 with no need to buy hardware. All you need is to send them a photocopy of your current student/faculty ID or Paycheck if you are Faculty with no ID.

Awesome deals for education...I got my Quickbooks Pro from JourneyEd for about $200 cheaper than retail.
