hard part..... how do i get the internet setup thingy? what do i look under in the C drive (?) for? is that that network neighborhood thing?? also will ventrilo work on windows 98se? I checked their site but never ran into it... (look its free.... )

ok once i get to that point ill be a lil better off... I will still have a few questions in a bit for a router ...

Go to the Start Menu, then Settings, then Control Panel, and then open up the Network icon. Click on TCP/IP, and then click on properties underneeth it. For IP Address, click on optain IP address automatically if you have a router that uses DHCP. Under WINS Configuration tab, click on Use DHCP for WINS Resolution. Under the DNS configuration tab, click Disable DNS. Then hit OK.

Once you're back in the main networking window, click on Client For Microsoft Windows, adn then click on properties. Check the Qiuck Logon option, and then hit ok.

Go to the identification tab and fill in the name you want for hte computer on the network.

Now make sure Client for Microsoft Windows is selected under Primary Network logon.

Then click ok, and restart your computer. It should work after that.

im having problems with my router....
i switched from cable to dsl....
all i had to do was plug in the router and everything worked...xbox, mac ps2 pc....
now all the lights light up but nothing is getting through? very lost.... gonna have another whirl with it tonight and gonna hop on and have at it with verizion....
so....ill keep ya up to date....i can dl the prog with this mac and feed it to the pc.....scary....

oh god wait till the mac goes intel next year, i have heard all sorts of things, that windows is going down the tube that apple is gonna let dell use there os and blah blah blah.... i wont buy another mac till they get there shit stright.

the wife wants a gaming pc now....for CODUO....

OK have a question... my router is slowing me down, when i play i get massive lag from it and i have trouble posting pics online and such...even things as simple as posting on here is a nightmare...could i have an issue with my router? could it be something with the settings i have? i bought a circuit city brand broadband router/ 4 port.....the guy told me a router is a router...and i can see that....did i fuck up?

Is it just from the PC you're going slow, or from the MAC too? For some reason I don't think it's the router. As far as I know, all home routers pretty much use the same routing algorithm(in my opinion home routers don't even really route, they operate more like a switch). The only difference is the hardware used. However, I still prefer anythign by LinkSys/Cisco over any of the other brands.

i just connected the pc yesterday but it was doing it with the xbox connected... might be coniceidence.

BTW i logged on to the vent server but got no sound....im still working out the kinks!

You probably need to go into setup and configure the sound card.

Silver I might be able to help you with the sound on vent if I am on while you are. Do you have me on your xfire lise or do you even have xfire? If not get it and add me and we can try to figure it out from there.

yeah...kinda pisses me off... i think its my connection with verizion...im not sure...it seems to be only with the mob servers and the forum...kinda weird.
example, when i play online i get this huge lag spike that goes away for a few minutes now i dont get that on lmao. (only other server i go to) with the forums i go to post and it freezes on me, but if i hit home i connect right away. im not that good with computer knowlege so im not sure what i should look for or do. and this just started like a few days agowhen i connect my cable directly to the puter i am able to post right away...

Very weird. Especially because the forums are hosted in California and the game server is in Chicago..

im on hold with tech support now and probably till aug. 35th.... i think it is something thats between me and the the verizion server thing. i mean there is more then wire to the isp thing right? (maybe more then wire for all i know... ) i dont get it cuz this started a few days ago...
time warner is looking into adelphia buyout so hopefully wel will get the same service as roadrunner... (adelphia service is allways out around here, shitty service) i dont know much about these things personally i think they are all crap, why cant they ever get anything to work like it should? this internet and computer stuff is like watching the late night tv ads that promise to do all this shit and when you get it its like a gerbil on a wheel....

yeah....im still trying to figure out wtf is going on... the verizion tech said his computer said my mac is not on line when i was suring the web while i was talking to him.... so he was totally lost at trying to help. then he said to by pass the router and go modem to mac and thats what i did. now i played for an hour and had no problems, i connected the router and with in 20 min i started losing connection. that affects the pc, xbox and the mac.... now im not sure if its the modem or the router cuz the light on the modem were ok but the connection was lost... and the router wouldnt keep his puter from seeing if i was on line.... and when i connected to the pc (bypassed) he still couldnt tell. now i did a speed test and it came back at 2.9 wtf ever that means.... im still lost and confused...but i think i can work at compusa now.... or be a tech guy.... i know as much as them.....

Does it lag when you connect the PC directly to the modem? What about when the PC is unplugged and the MAC and XBOX are the only ones plugged in? If you said yes to the former, then it is a problem with the PC, and if you said yes to the latter, then there could be a problem with your router??

I was going to say download TCPOptimizer if it was only his pc and only if it was running Windows 98 or ME. But This is not the case I believe. If you are running Windows 98 or ME I will still advise you to download TCPOptimizer.

ok this is what happened......i connected the router and tried to do the test.... it came back busy and couldnt do the test....i tried that about tten times and it wouldnt do the test.... i bypassed the router and poof the test was done

now i did this on my mac because that is the constant and all the others (xbox, router, pc) are the varibles.... now it came back having a few things i could change but i dont know what they were talking about, if someone could put it in english i would be greatful.
i was told to ask if the modem might not be powerful enough to push through the router? and i still dont know why it wouldnt work with the router hooked up. grrrrrr

Silver, read Behemoths post because what he is saying is that your pc may be causing the problem. If your pc is infected with a virus or lots of spyware connecting to the net and stealing bandwidth then it will effect everything coming through your router. It is also good practice to unplug you modem to reset it every now and then but I'm sure you have done this by now.

Last nite we played COD for an hour with the connection directly to the mac. we played with no problems...then disconnected from game, hooked up the router with just the mac plugged into the router and within a couple of minutes the connection f*cked up.... i am playing on the mac and using the pc just for vent. (it would croak if i tried to do anything else with it.) i should go to school to understand these thing more...

i cant tell if there is lag on the xbox...i dont play it alot.


i still dont understand why they cant tell if its something with my modem or not.....

and for reseting the modem...dear god im ready to kick it through the wall....

When all else fails call tech support for the router manufacturer.
