I was watching some old WWII movies and i watch this one only for the 2nd time
and i have to say that it was damn good.
I think that most of the good WWII movies where made back in the late 70's and 80's
Some of the new movies are ok.
What do some of you WW2 movie fans think>?

Wile not technically a movie, "Band of Brothers" is my favorite. Although I know it was kind of cheesy, my favorite older movie is "Kelly's Heroes". I liked it becasue it was the first movie to use real Shermans & real Tigers. "The Battle of Britain" and "Das Boot" were also very good. Has anyone been watching Ken Burn's "The War" that has been showing on PBS the past week? Really really good stuff!

I saw "The Great Escape" the other night, which was interesting because it was based on real events. Kind of funnywatching an old 60's movie, but I enjoyed it.
FYI, Das Boot comes in two versions. A 3 hour movie, which was actually editted from a 6 or 7 hour miniseries (rough numbers). I saw the movie. It was fairly good.
Another good movie was "Shaving Ryan's Privates"...oops, I uh, er mean "Saving Private Ryan". Err, yeah.

Have you seen Enemy at the gates
, Where Eagles Dare and
Der untergang http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUVqSCH8Fhohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o75fMh-_QmUhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkSpPq8E1Ek
Cross of Iron, Stalingrad and Das Boot is good movies
Don't forget "Bridge Too Far", great movie with an all-star cast.
Another one for Bridge Too Far, a great movie about operation market garden.
A movie a lot of people probably haven't seen or don't remember
"Tora Tora Tora"
An almost documentary accurate look at Pearl harbor.
It won an academy award for best special effects, way ahead of it's time.
Several later movies used footage from Tora because it was so good for it's time (1970's)
While not a movie, it's worth a mention.
For those who liked Band of Brothers
You may want to get the book "Beyond Band of Brothers"
Written by Major Dick Winters, Easy Company's commanding officer.
Not as entertianing as Band of Brothers but an inspiring look at what they went through.
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. It's the WWII movie that i always wanted to made. Seems like from real accounts of D-Day to be the closest to catch the actual gore and violence that faced those guys. As a kid though, really liked Bridge Too Far, Tora Tora Tora and Midway.
But why has no one mentioned that amazing movie Pearl Harbor. Come on people, it had top notch actors like Ben Affleck and a tight story line - true cinematic genius.
saving ryans private was probably my favorite but kelly's heroes i great. And cross nailed it with enemy at the gates, that movie is awesome
1. Bridge Too Far
2. Band of Brothers
3. Kelly's heroes.
Nobody has mentioned that other classic Eastwood movie "Where Eagle Dare" or "The Guns of Navaronne" Both awesome movies. Cross, i agree with you, "Enemy at The gates" was amazing.
By the way i was joking about Pearl Harbor - total hack job. If you go to IMDB.com and type the name of the war movie you like, then at the bottom there's a link to "Goofs for...." Pretty interesting hearing all the factual errors and the like for each movie.
Thank god for that shaz, i would of had to kill you for liking that crappy movie Pearl Harbor!
A movie about 2 guys fighting over one girl oops btw Pearl Harbor just got bombed!

When you said "it had top notch actors like Ben Affleck", I got so confused I couldn't read any futher. I only had 3 theories...
1. There are 2 Ben Afflecks.
2. You are a monkey and had managed to pound keys randomly on a keyboard to it make a legible, though nonsensical, english sentence
3. You were joking.
Glad to note it was 3, though 2 would have been cool.
The Longest Day and In Harms Way... great cast and story lines... Long Live John Wayne...
Loved Tora, Tora, Tora and Midway....
All time favorite TV show.... COMBAT... Have all 5 seasons on DVD...
Interesting Combat Site
I like band of brothers an than down fall. has anyone else seen down fall its in german won all kind of awards in europe.its about the last days in hitlers bunker great movie. i like the eastern front stuff.i dont think theres enough movies about that part of the war in usa.i have to go out and get books about it.

1. "Where Eagle Dare"
2. "The Guns of Navaronne"
Personally I like the Vietnam movies a whole lot better. My favorites are "Full metal Jacket" and "Platoon"
Cross of Iron

Full Metal Jacket was filmed at Bassingbourne Barracks Queens Division ,in Royston (if you read the end credits )
and yours truly was stationed there for active service ,for 18 months...they still have the assault course in place.
Also the Memphis bell was stationed there during WW2 and the film of the same name was filmed there too.

On top of many mentioned above I really enjoyed Conspiracy. It was made for TV or something but was one of the best WW2 movies I have seen. Absolutely horrifying and gripping at the same time. Well worth the effort to track down. I have watched it 3 or 4 times and am stunned by it everytime.
Plot description for Conspiracy: "The historical recreation of the 1942 Wannsee Conference, in which Nazi and SS leaders gathered in a Berlin suburb to discuss the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question". Lead by SS-General Reinhard Heydrich, this group of high ranking German officials came to the historic and far reaching decision that the Jews of Europe were to be exterminated in what would come to be known as the Holocaust."
Others I have enjoyed that haven't been mentioned so far is "Shinning Through" Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffith -mostly cause I got a thing for Melanie, and "Schindlers List"

Actually "Pearl Harbor" was a good action movie but it was only 1 hour long.
The 2 hours they tacked on to the front was total garbage but I see all the latest
WW2 movies doing the same. The ones made back during the actual war years
were the best. They were directly to the point. The ones made today are so junked
up with smoltsy plots & sultry scenes, its stupid to say the least....
