Full Version: Ventrilo Server Fixed???
{MOB} Forums > Announcements > {MOB} News
Druid
I realize we've had everyone jumping through hoops with the several recent changes on Ventrilo & then switching to Teamspeak.
As big as a pain as this was, unfortunately it was necessary.
The change to our original ventrilo server was to enable MAC users to access it.
After the change, several people had problems of one type or another.

The people who host our ventrilo server has setup a new one to see if that fixes everyone's issues.

The new info is
Hostname : vent3.clanservers.com
Server Port : 4485
Same password as before.

Please let us know if this new server works for you.
If not, we will make a decision to use a ventrilo server hosted elsewhere or switch to Teamspeak permanently.
We will go with whatever option works the the largest majority.

The Vent server worked for us during the TWL match yesterday, that is, all of us except Bargod. H8 was the one who seemed to take this the hardest. We kept hearing him moaning stuff about his "pumpkin." It was disconcerting to lose your team captain moments before entering the match, but c'mon man, Cowboy Up!

As a Mac user, I'd say they are identical. The one thing that bugs me is that neither one alerts us when a new person has joined the server.

The problem with TS is it sounds like people are talking through a tube to me . That sort of gives me a headache, however that was some time agao and maybe I better buck up and dl it.

Oh ya for the record, I offered it before and I will do so one last time. I have a ventrilo server through typefrag.com for my gaming site. I will set up a room for mob only with all the usual channels appointing four admins of Mob's choice. I HAVE" to keep this ventrilo for q-3 and other matches so it will never go anywhere and it will cost Mob nothing. Will some please say yes or no to this?

What i dont like about TS is that when someone comes on to the server it just says "new player" doesnt say who like vent does...and if you join a different channel it doesnt let ne one know that...it just moves you down to it with no alert !! So i guess im sayin i like vent better !!!

yeahh i guess vent is better for you windows users..

right now, i cant talk on vent anymore. for some reason the new vent server isnt allowing mac users to talk, and also, vent never had the alerts for me. never told me when someone joins, leaves, or goes to another channel...

so what im saying is, even though ts may not be the best sounding app with the best features out there, those of us who have mics, are at least able to comminucate (including mac players)

Ventrilo is far superior to TS IMO. Like you guys say, it's great when the person joining the server is actually announced.

We did two scrims today with no drop outs, multiple connects or any other problems. Seems very solid. We just need to get people to switch from teamspeak back to this new Vent.

Also, almost everyone has made a common mistake trying to get into the new Vent:

It is vent3clanservers.com. It is not the old vent2clanservers.com.

Hamma that info is for the 2nd Ventrilo server I had setup for testing to see if our vent problems were serverside.
The vent server everyone should use is the one listed at the beginning of the topic.

Hostname : vent3.clanservers.com
Server Port : 4485
Same password as before.

Lord Lipton
to everyone who doesn't like TS because it doesn't announce who signed in or who's talking, i was talking to my fellow Reg buddy Lyonheart yesterday and he told me about how he downloaded this thing called TeamSpeakOverlay on google, and it shows all the information you want. i personally would rather stick to TS, if this works out for me, because as some people know my vent likes to just go out and give me and error message on my desktop about not being to run both and and overload or some bullshit. which i do not get for TS.

I have no problems with either, but I really prefer Ventrillo's sound quality. (Plus the announcement of who joined the channel.)
Hellfighter
so.... last night in Stocks for 3 maps all WAS well with vent / Everyone could actually hear me... then it cut out by itself! No one could hear me thereafter.
No idea why until I disconnected from CoD then I saw a vent error message; something about data stream flowing too fast/try using direct sound....

From there all went south to hell.... I'm trying every conceivable set-up in vent [outbounds/inbounds way to the right]; mic this mic that; volume properties; googled vent setup; reinstalled vent; did a Windows con/pan-add/remove repair on it; tried a complete uninstall, but upon fresh install the same settings show up; direct sound options.... the best I can do is always show as green rather than green only while I speak.

It's a sunny nice day here, but this vent problem is looming over me something ugly - especially with twl game tomorrow; Can someone/ or several of you do me a favour.....
Please post screenies of your vent set-up display whistling.gif

EDIT; Ok I just went and chatted with someone in Barby, seems like I'm heard fine, but I'm showing permanent green.... I'd still like to see your properly functioning set-ups. I won't show mine yet - it probably looks very goofy so I'll wait to see your posts...... wink.gif
Druid
You siad your showing green all the time.
Are you using voice activated? If so you have the sensitivity set wrong.

I would say about half the people using the voice activation option have it set wrong.
You either transmit all the time or you cut in an out.

ScrapyardBob
And I'm firmly of the opinion that everyone should be using Push-To-Talk rather then Voice Activation. The only folks who should be using Voice Activation are those who are using a second computer for Ventrillo.

I get rather annoyed by hearing background noises from other players on the voice channel when they could cut out 90% of the noise by switching to a PTT key setup. When there's a dozen of us in the voice channel, none of us want to hear someone arguing with the S.O., it just makes the already cluttered voice chatter worse.

(PTT vs VA is one of my hot buttons.)
Druid
I agree with you completely scrap.
It gets tiresome having to listen to people breath, cough, talk to other people in the room, echoe's of other players & everything else people transmit just because they won't take the time to correctly configure VA or use Puch to Talk.

People don't realize how inconsiderate they are to everyone else on Vent when they use Voice Activation and have it configured wrong.
They also fail to realize they have to test their setting everytime they join because a small difference in the placement of their mic makes a huge difference on the VA settings.
HammaTime
How about a show of hands .. who uses Push-to-talk vs VA?

I'm PTT.
Hellfighter
Up until everything went nutty on my vent with that error message, the green was only flashing when I talked! It's very weird that I seemingly can't get back to that with all the NUMEROUS variations/repairs/reinstalls I've attempted already... trust me..... alot!

yuh, I know BG one night when we had TS, I could hear all of Samoan's background buzz... lol, like the tv , and this was during a game time-out- but he was unaware of it, perhaps an accidental tap on controls somewhere.....
Hellfighter
Just one posted screenie of someone's vent setup window in this thread may help me out.....? wink.gif
ScrapyardBob
1. Open up the Windows volume control.

1a. Options -> Properties -> Select "Recording" -> Click "OK"

1b. Microphone column should be selected. Volume should be about 3/4 (more or less). Some microphones require that you also muck with Advanced options (Microphone Boost typically).

2. Open up Ventrillo, go to the "Voice" setup tab.

2a. Turn ON "Enable outgoing voice comm"
2b. Turn ON "Use Push-To-Talk Hotkey"
2c. Optional - Turn ON "Use DirectInput to detect Hotkey"
2d. Set a HotKey for your PTT setting (I use "C")

3. Optional settings - Use DirectSound for input/output

4. Test your setup using the Monitor/Test buttons at the bottom of the Voice tab.

Thanks Bob... I had those options you outlined... still a visual screenie would be extremely beneficial as requested. I had vent up n running prior to twl match last night and then it crashed. In spite of my adjusting to diect sound as the vent error message suggests! "data transfer too fast...." error.

Anyway I'll try totally uninstalling vent then do a fresh install without saved settings.

ps. How does the Monitor/test work-as in what are you supposed to see/read/hear precisely when you click on them?
Bargod
I actually used to run into the problem hell is having when I used to use push to talk. It seemed to clear up when I switched to voice activated.
ScrapyardBob
Monitor / test with the mic disconnected or turned off should show a level reading of "zero" (or something) in the vertical scrolling area beside the button. As you make noise, those values should change.

Make sure that you verify that you have the latest drivers for your soundcard.
Hellfighter
We'll see tonite if i get it all sorted, I have latest drivers and will do a complete fresh vent install... its an annoying thing isn't it BG.
Hellfighter
I think I got it working. I totally uninstalled vent, installed it again after cleaning up my registry.... then I deleted MOB settings [which I'm still not sure why it remained there after registry tweaks?]. Anyway I think that allowed me to reset things fresh and apparently working ok in the vent lobby.
Hellfighter
Update....
Vent is continuing to conk out about 1 hour after I play;
Vent error message is about data too fast for my soundcard and recommending using directsound - which I do... but still vent conks out with the same message....

Anyone know precisely or can find out what vent setting tweaking I can do to stop the error messages? Thanks

Hi Hellfighter,

Sorry to hear you're having such difficulties with Vent. I've been scouring the net in search of an answer for you but the info out there is vague and elusive, as I'm sure you are aware.

I know you would like screenies or a pic with the "correct" settings and I'm not ignoring that request, I just don't know (1) how to do that, and (2) if a screenshot of my configuration would work for you and your setup.

I do, however, have a suggestion. (I hear ya, "Oh crap, not another suggestion." LOL) It makes sense, and it would be something I would try if I were having these difficulties.

1. Uninstall vent.

2. Uninstall soundcard drivers, sound control softwware.

3. Shut down machine and relocate soundcard to another available slot.

4. Start machine, reload latest drivers for sound card, follow on screen directions, ( re-start, etc.)

5. Install and setup Vent.

The reason to move the sound card is esentially to let the computer "forget it was ever there" and reassign a new IRQ. Perhaps this will resolve any conflicts, even those that are not recorded as conflicts in "System Information". (There are many ways to "skin a cat" as they say. This, however, would be my way of skinning that cat.)

If you have already tried this, please disregard. Otherwise, maybe this will help. Good luck.

Thanks Sabot,
Maybe that sound card switch might work but I can't open things up yet to void my very good warranty[6 more months] and taking it in to get it switched is a bit of a hassle [big actually].

This happens in Cassino too I found out- not just stocks.
Tried PushToTalk - still that shuts down too.
I turned off things running in background like real updater and java updater to see if this'll help next time I'm on.

So once again I make my final appeal.... again---please don't just type out your set-up.
Can someone please do an alt-printkey screenshot of their vent set-up options and post it here so I can more closely scrutinize a working order vent set up?.
