I have a bit of the jitters right now since I was on my way to do chores in the very area of the shooting this morning but got lazy and ended up staying at home[ For those of you who don't know, I live in Montreal]. I just turned on the tv to watch msnbc news and there I see video of what horror was emerging a few hours ago in downtown area of Montreal. It's incredibly fortunate the superb police force here reacted fast against the shooter[s]. So far it appears no students have been killed, but 6 confirmed critical, 2 seriously, 4 stable- two gunmen dead. Right now the police are sweeping the area to see if any other shooters are possibly lurking about. Let's hope for the best for these young kids caught up in this tragedy.

OMG--- Hellfighter, I am so glad you are ok.

I worked midnights last night then had criminal court this morning. At 13:00 hrs we broke for lunch and my case was put over until the afternoon. I went with a few of the guys I work with to grab some lunch. As we are sitting there, I look over to the big screen TV and see the coverage of Montreal Shooting. I asked the bar tender to turn off the music and crank the TV volume. All I could think about was---I hope our Hellfighter is ok.

This is a terrible day! It looked so chaotic, trying to evacuate people, others being carried on stretchers and the unknown at that time...we're the shooters still at large. Hellfighter, my thoughts are with you and your community through this tragic time.

Let us know if there is anything we can do to help!!

Thanks 6pak. One thing that impressed me when I first moved here was the professionalism of cops-any whoever differs with that opinion in my presence get a rude awakening - No doubt their quick response averted a much greater horror. I'm very pro-law and order so seeing madness like this really infuriates me; and then as Wotansvolk puts the unanswerable question "why?" - its the thought of that question which deeply leaves me hollow inside that disturbed peoples cruelty unleashes itself like this too commonly on so many innocents. Thanks for your carings. As Cross says let's all pray/ hope for the best - especially for the critically wounded.

I dont want to seem insensitive, but those snipers are posers! DC had the original student/people snipers...but i do hope those kids are alright, i would imagine it really really really sucks to be shot by a sniper rifle

I don't know what a 'poser' is young meowman, but it's really not the time to make comparisons as to which kind of mass murderer is/was more 'original' or 'badder'. Furthermore there were no snipers and no sniper rifle involved-so far it seems to be a lone gunman -columbine similarities > he ended up in the school atrium shooting kids as they lay down.... and from what we're seeing on tv in interviews with kids who fled the campus and/or witnessed the shooter they're not saying how the kids they saw got shot feel it "really really really sucks". They're generally in shock and making frenzied phone calls to see if friends they lost contact with in the escape are not among the injured. To add to the confusion, it was hard to make such cellphone calls what with the heavy transmission traffic.

I went to the area tonight since I had things to do in the area. Right now 1 block is cordoned off to everyone and to traffic up to 3 blocks away, other than that due to the light rain here nobody is in that section. We'll see what happens tomorrow but I suppose all prayers are for the critically wounded to make a recovery. Thankfully given the situation everyone who couldkeep this tragedy to a minimum did their best; cops, paramedics and the teachers who instantly directed the kids to barricade their classrooms. The maniac was cornered in his final position fairly quickly given how large that campus building is. Talking to a friend within a block when shots rang out, the cops were quickly evacuating everyone in the area to a safety boundary. Sensibly, the school is being shut down for one week also.

Just to make an update: They find out there was only one gunman who probably shot himself when he saw the cops near him(what a coward) and a 20 year old girl is dead from the wound she got. Fortunately was'nt as bad as what happened in ecole polytechnique some years ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Lepine.

Keep prayin cause there still 3 personin very critical shape at the hospital right now!

Pat, glad you decided not to go out that morning. What a tragedy in a place that is usually so tranquil. Stay safe.

I love how they use the words "alleged" or "suspected" gunman. The fact that the police shot him while he was shooting back isnt enough to say he was the idiot who did the shooting. We have to say he "may" have been the gunman. What a freakin joke....

Well I spoke with a senior police officer friend of mine. While I expressed gratefulness in his comrades fast reaction he said quote "We were lucky, we were very lucky!".
From what I'm hearing probably due to the two other infamous Montreal campus shooting sprees in the last 18 years, the response was predetermined for the cops. Making a safety perimeter is secondary... moving in fast to 'neutralise' rampaging maniacs quickly is priority... and this was how the brave cops cornered the maniac within 30 or so minutes.
My friend also told me it was a very near thing; he knew the cop who shot the gunman [ EDIT; getting the word gunman did kill himself, but not sure if that's after he got shot at/hit] and said quote "That guy's a good cop!". Obviously meaning this was the right officer in the right place at the right time. Before going down with his assault rifle[?] the gunman took a shot that narrowly went over the officer's head. The officer was armed with a only a walther 9mm pistol!
I can say now that I visited the area again this morning, the campus alone is now closed off. Montrealer's are generally not in shock-this I can only attribute to the fact that this is now the 3rd deadly shooting spree on a campus in recent memory. Save for the one lovely young lady who was killed it was a miracle that with all the other casualties, the only other fatality was the maniac.
Personally I'm ok, save for wishing sincerely I could put my fist through the maniac's face. Unfortunately Canada the peaceful is not always so. For me, I've been in 3 situations in public/tourist downtown Montreal and Toronto where wild gunfire has sent crowds fleeing for safety[noone hurt]. One such occasion a bullet richoted 6' behind me while I was drawing a customer - at the time we laughed since being unaware of what was going on fully momentarily, we were the only ones still in the street while crowds around us were taking cover. But the next few days my nerves were very shaken. So I can in a very minute way relate to what these students went through as the maniac passed within inches of them blazing away. I've used 'maniac' here to be polite in the post, but I'll leave it to you as to how I really want to refer to him/it.
Thanks for caring and hearing me let out a bit friends. Again let's all wish these young survivors recover as best as possible.

Hellfighter, Just losing one of my close friends in the line of duty has made me aware that there is never room for complacency. Althought people often look at us as hard headed and cold hearted, there is no truth to that. Due to the fact that we see so much violence, we often become hard in the sense that we are left showing no emotion.

Our training is on-going throughout our career. It's not like you become a police officer and school stops. We train throughout our entire career. Active shooter training is one of the best I have had. We train for major diasters, barricaded gunman, high risk vehicle stops, victim assistance..and the list goes on. It's a times like this, when a tragic event happens that our training is revealed. First and foremost is saving lives.

There are times when we feel like we just can't do anything...but training is automatic..that fight instinct, not flight. I am so glad your Police Service did such an outstanding job, I just can't imagine how many lives they saved.

Most of all, I am glad you were out of the area at that time. We need our Hellfighter.

God Bless

I read something this morning about this individual. His profile picture on that vampirefreaks.com site is a picture of him pointing a gun at the camera. Apparently he liked to play some role playing game about the Columbine shooting.

It's so strange to me, that there exists this giant culture of self loathing middle class. At least we can see some sliver of justification behind killing out of desperation (i.e. robbery). But here we see nothing. This individual was seemingly well off and yet he killed simply because he glorified it (apparently one of the victims died).

Makes me sick to my stomach. Next time he should just shoot himself, at least spare those who enjoy their life on this earth. Next the American media is going to find some way to blame the internet or video games. Wait for it.

Here is the update on the killer and his world of hate. Apparently he was shot in the arm by the police and then turned his gun on himself..suicide.

Thanks again 6-pak. I think we're in the frame of mind here how things could've ended much more nightmarishly worse and some angels/cops interceded fast to stop the madness.
