I- DID- NOT- NO- DAT- N- E 1- CUD- HIT- BAS- WIT- TANK- ON- UDDER- SYD- OF- MAP. (JUst kidding jimmy) I didn't really.
I must see this for myself. I have tryed for days to find spots to do so.. and could find nothing close.
Scrappy was pretty meticulous about the map, but if there is a way to get it done, our players will figure it out.....
not a sermon, just a thought.

You know Jimmy, you bring up a very good point...one of which has been, and continues to be a topic in the forums here on a monthly basis. (approximately)
I have to side with you to a certain degree, as the long range shelling definitely changes the dynamics and the strategies of classic base assault. I have played a few rounds of Barb lately, and I tell you, I don't enjoy it as much as I used to simply because of the "pac attack" and the "tank terror from afar". It always starts the same way (on Barb) as the German 2 and 3 bases immediately come under long range attack with the Russian bases sitting quietly until someone can maneuver a tank into position and hit them, or drive to within "eyeball range" and take them down. (There's already a thread about this so I won't go into detail here) Ultimately, it is the plant that counts, however if you cannot defend against the long range shelling and open up your opponents bases at nearly the same time as yours are peeled, you will lose...nothing new here. Add to this a mix of new players with absolutely no idea how all of this works and the once fun and challenging Barb experience is now a futile exercise in base camping/defending and countless bases lost from long range pac cover with no way to counter. I digress.
Yes, I realize that all of this sort of thing is legal in game play, and yes I believe it is typical human nature to find shortcuts that improve the outcome of situations and I salute those with much more time than I, that are willing to go to the expense of time and money to spend hours determining long range positions that will ultimately bring rewards in the form of a victory on a video game (that's why we play it, right?). True, this is the same thought process that is employed in daily life whether you load trucks for a living or plan the next global conflict..but, it is too bad that it leads to lop-sided victories due to team stacking and other unfortunate events that somehow ruins the excitement and takes away from gameplay as bases are opened from some remote location halfway across the map. I believe this sort of play now requires the average player who enjoys coming in for a quick round or two, or even the regular player that just enjoys "playing" and does not possess a degree in engineering and physics, now has to devote more time and effort just to be competitive and instead of playing for fun, that person is now having to "work" at it just to keep one's head above water, so to speak, to remain competitive.
On the other hand, progress is generally seen as a good thing and it is interesting to note that people will always seek to find an advantage over competition. But in the process of gaining an edge, something is lost and it is never the same again. That is ALWAYS the case, no matter what the point of discussion might be.
So, Jimmy, I know exactly what you are saying and there is really little to be done to alter what thousands of years of evolution (case in point) can do to stop mankind and his incessant drive to overcome adversity (Not that we would want to if we could). However, in this case and perhaps on other maps as well, things could be changed up a bit as to keep people thinking and moving forward by, perhaps, changing the physical properties of maps. Move the pacs, or do away with one or two. Put trees in spots so tanks cannot be placed there to shell long range. Maybe a few, slight modifications could be employed to freshen up the maps and route players in new directions to keep a somewhat level playing field while, at the same time, inviting innovative imaginations to raise the level of gameplay without leaving everyone else behind.
Certainly there are MANY sides to this issue and I can see all of them very clearly. I only write this to share in Jimmy's disappointment and put forth an idea that may keep the forest from going in the direction that Barb has gone, in that it is still a popular map for most, but it definitely lost something that cannot be regained for others.
hey jimmy, long time no see,i do agree with you ,its why i hate playing foy! i still love barb though. as for the forrest there were some lr shots but bob didnt want his map to be like that/barb so there were trees added in to stop the shots. there are a few but nothing like in the beginning.what are you saying jim ,are all six bases being taken down?
Well Igot the idea from the MOB tuchola forest guide where scrapyard said you can hit em from long range.I found ways to hit all the bases from long range an when jimmy an maybe a couple of other guys said something I stopped an have not done it since.I dont want to make the game not fun for anybody. But there are a few who still do it I cant do anything about that its just like spawn killers an snipers nobody likes it but its part of the game

As I've said MANY times before: I hate the long range shots, and it has killed a lot of the enjoyment on Barbarossa (I'm often tempted to go to a different server as well). Too bad TF is going that way now too... Cant they just put a clear wall in the middle of the map to prevent the long range shells??? It takes a lot of the strategy out of the game IMO.

I tried to play UO the other day. It seemed like unless you were already educated with a degree in Tanks and long range guns you were wasting your time. I ran pointlessly from one side of the map to the other 3 times to be shelled by some tank. This game really isnt for someone hoping to drop in and have a good time... IMO anyway. Maybe one day you can teach me or convince me otherwise. Until then you'll only see me on the riffle range trying to best whatever high score might be there....

I love the long range shots!
Play TDM if you don't like them!
The server is always packed. There is long range shots, but that leads the teams to learn new tactics....as in war. Once you figure out your opponents advantage, you must alter your defense. The more people play, the better they get. At the end of the day, it's all about team work and communication.
OMG JIMMY, my eyes hurt after reading your post----------. Next post can you please just writer normal. I had perfect vision until tonight...LOL

I agreed with you Jimmy, but when you can use the pak, why shall i don't use it?. And to "S@bote" try to put building in front of G-2 like R-3. Then the attac team can get hide from german campers...
1. Let us move the Pak from the map
2. Let the Tank get 1 rounds of live ammunition. They can shoot when the Bas is within 5 foot reach
I think the server soon will be emty of players

I'd like to see a "pak free Friday" on Barb. Just sink them 20 feet underground for a Friday sometime soon and see what happens. Even if just for one day, it'd be funny as hell listening to all the comments from people. "where's the pak...what happened to the pak...didn't there used to be a pak here...I can't find the pak..." and so forth!
Poor TBN would probably curl up in a ball and start crying. Rommel too!

Hey MOD,
Since I have been sniped so many times, I too have been using tanks to take down the walls of German bases. Only to assist a plant on G2 you can find me on a pak.

OK,
as a long time long ranger....
on russian, yes, two of the paks can hit some of the german bases, on German one pak can hit one of the russian bases. The real power on that map is the spawned tanks.... On russian, just about every spawned tank can hit a german base. on german, i know of at least 2 tanks that can hit multiple targets, one specifically can hit the elusive middle back pak on russian, and the pak behind 3.... So, I have practiced, and it is cheap but it is a skill, a menial one, but a skill none the less, AND a bonafide tactic. MANY people on the servers get accused of hacking, and cheating, and always a deaf ear falls upon them, but a group of us have played long enough to learn this tactic and it is just as frustrating to an opponent as someone who miraculously rips through 3 people, never getting hit, getting headshots, and single bodyshot kills. Base assault is great because there is an objective. people cannot just sit and be contributors the whole time. The bases are a distraction and a pupose to play. Almost every tactic has a counter attack. almost. Last night we had a few great games, the bases fell, and the real game began. That really is when it gets nuts, two or three plants at once... I am rambling.... Undead smells.

As you can see from this screenshot taken last night, anything can happen on any given night. Good players on both sides, it was no contest, the Russians didn't have a chance.
The Russians only destroyed one base the whole game, even though they cracked all or most of the bases from long range.
The Germans were pushing tanks and infantry on all three fronts with little or no defense on their bases, which kept the Russians on the ropes so they couldn't advance far enough to destroy any bases.
Well I guess I can't post the image here either so i'll post the link

HERE That was a pretty fun game last night, and one of the best performances by a German team I've seen - considering the opposition. The Russians were shut out in the first round, and only got one base near the end of round 2. Disciplined German defense was key. Unfortunately we left R3 for last in both rounds and couldnt get through either time...
Good stuff tho!
This was my whole point earlier when talking with MOD. If there is good players in German, the paks dont mean shit. It is just all depending on where the good players are. The map is fine the way it is. If you were to take the paks out, then I would say to put more Russian Heavies in and take out the Stug to make it even.

That game last night was awesome, and a perfect example of the Paks not having a dam thing to do with the outcome of the game. It was purely driven by the determination of the German team to hold their ground and keep the Russian team on their heals. I was on Vent while this game was going on and the Russian players were absolutely frustrated that they could not blow a base.
And by the way... what a game for Cpt.Canuck, did you see that score! Nice job.

Agreed totally. I do see Junkie's point about needing to know how to use the tanks and pak to not be totally pwnd. But once I learned Barb (and I only know a couple long range shots) I loved it... hard.
Also Jimmy told me he is dyslexic, so the way he types probably works for him.... meanie.
