Full Version: {FBI} Server Anyone?

-=Chaplin=-
Hey Guys, Everyone has been starting to talk about renting thier own FBI server. I personally don't know a hell of alot about this sort of thing but wanted to get start a new thread discussing it.

I for one would be interested in supporting a server, though money is so tight right now I'd like to know the specifics (don't forget $10 American is like $14-$15 Canadian plus paypal's $5.00 charge - it starts to get alittle expensive on a monthly basis for me). It's not that I'm unwilling, mind you, but I would like to know more. I don't have a real job like most of you, lol, I'm in the restaurant industry.

Does anyone have any info to share as to how to set this thing up? Can someone email FK and see what it would take to take over his server, etc.

cheers,

I invited FK to be part of the new FBI site, even just to have hi, in the forums saying whats up now and then.

You must respect anyone who works as hard as he did and has such a gift and passion for his creations.

Running a server would be a great idea, so if anyone of you are skilled in the ways of an Admin, please step up and say so......or even if you just want to give it a try.

With the new Medal of Honor games coming out, if we as FBI unite and get organized NOW, we can simply carry over into the new games as they arrive.

In PC Gamer mag, they have a post saying that MEDAL OF HONOR II is on its way.

On page 84 of the April issue.

ok, lets get some prices and find out. I am happy to put some money in but we need to get this right from the start.

I dont think it is realistic for everyone to put in the same amount so it would have to be based on what people can afford as some ppl are students etc

Of course we would expect Chaplin to cook for us as part of the deal.... you can cook right ? you did say you worked in a restaurant!

I think we need to learn more about what it takes to run a dedicated server.

Some questions I have are,
- what kind of connection do you need to run to have
a decent dedicated server?
- What are average monthly costs in running a server?
-What about skills involved in running a server?
- Any information would be very helpful or us
- WIll Chappy be cooking for us? Because after work that is the last thing I want to do... ask my wife

Please take into consideration that some of us are West coast, some are Canada..not sure if that is central or east.

Sounds good!

Might want to ask some of the better clans/servers what they use and or recommend.

Might have already weeded out the bad ones.

Couple more that might prove to have usefull info

I dont think it really matters too much about location, we just want an ISP with a decent INternet connection and plenty of bandwidth. ALthough we will probably find the east coastservers may reduce the number of hops for me, so my ping may get below 180.

The main consideration here is cost! Lets get reasonable if were looking at $200 p/m we want to all be able to play ok. We need to consider if this is worthwhile, at the moment we effectively play for free.

I still think the best way forward at the moment is to check whats already running and adopt a quiet server, then we can look at buying a server later.

Lets check out te following servers recommended by Chappy

207.44.194.67:12204 - *JPS* Spearhead Server #2, 24 slots

207.44.194.67:12203 - *JPS* Spearhead Server #1, 24 slots

Looks good!

I will work on the website if you want to check out the servers.

Together with AMOK and Sokhar, we should get it up in no time!

Which web host do you want to use....does it really matter?

I have been using ICDsoft and LOVE their tech support...just ask Sokhar how fast it was!

Check your emails, I sent the Admin of FBIclan.com a message that we will take over the domain since he is not using it.

PLease let me know.....I really enjoy working on websites and that aspect of things.

gotta agree with svoller on this one. Let's exhaust the free options first, these things always wind up costing more than you'd expect. Solidify oursleves and then look at the bells and whistles. We don't even have someone who knows how to admin a server (someone is more thna welcome to prove me wrong here).

As for cooking - after cooking 8 hours a day for seven years you pick up a few things here and there. Like I know that "sometimes the risotto just wants to be alone." (Gold star for source of this quote)
Smoke, Spectre, Team Canada, Lt. G.Reaper, Agent Inky and myself have got the, "what do de Americans say, de hot...dog? yes we can sell de hot-dogs" covered at the 1st Annual FBI Picnic

I am afriad I have to agree with svoller and chaplin on this I think we should get organized first get a real count of all the {FBI} and then wonce the site and fourms are up and running then we can disscuss what ppl can afford like svoller said there are some of us that are students (in july that will include me as well) so I think we should find a server that we all like and play there intill we can figure out what ppl can and are willling to pay I have a freind that runs the {SS} (silent sams) an 13 man AA server thats almost all ways empty I will ask if we can play there if you guys want
Sigma-Chi
I agree with the website being the first priority so as to get organized first and have a central spot for communication.

you guys are more than welcome to play on the DMA clan server. It runs plenty of custom maps and we are about to implement Fk's mod to it as well. The only real difference would be that it is run on allied assault instead of spearhead. It seems the net code on spearhead is too inefficient. This is why FK had to pay $400.00 a month, since he wanted it to run on a box by itself.

Our server ip is 66.151.182.86 or dmaclan.ilanserver.com

We also have some pretty cool server stats on ou r website that you guys ought to check out that ilan provides. Anyway, good luck guys and I hope to see some of you on the DMA server.

BTW would you guys be interested in setting up a scrimmage against dma ?

my server admin for tribes2 had just switched the whole clan website forums and game server to a place called serverbeach. they run both linux and windows servers for real reasonable prices. www.serverbeach.com. just thought that i would mention that in case y'all are looking to start up a server.

but please post where everyone will be going to play, i have throughly enjoyed the game with you guys and want to continue the massacre.

If and when you all decide to go with a server, I would like to volunteer to help Admin, especially if we go with Xgameservers. I did it for a while with AA, and SH. I have not done it in a while but there have not been many changes. Anyone who wants it, I will send the console commands for both AA and SH to you or you can just copy them from ALLIED ASSAULT. I also have a pretty good free FTP client for anyone who does not have one and will be admin'ing the server.

When it does happen:

1. We should ALL be commited to making sure this will work
2. We should already have some kind of schedule (when or if we get into ladders?)
3. We should ALL send in payment on a regular basis (trust me it sucks when you expect it and it is not there)
4. Site should be done (server hosts offer free or cheap web hosting, transfering site when we are done = easier)
5. Decide on whether or not to run Pure, mods, etc. Or just keep it as FK did (best).
6. When the new expansion comes out, are we going to switch if the host service supports it?

Just a few things to think about... It is not easy to keep it all going unless we are really commited to starting this. This is a big decision, no matter who makes the payment, runs the server, or keeps up the site. Obviously we all have something to contribute in one way or another. So lets make sure we are going to do this before we actually set out and do it. Enough said, just food for thought so to speak.

Just a thought . . . I have hardware for a dedicated server and if a 768K SDSL connection (768k up and down) would work to host a server on, I could host a server from my house on the west coast.

I can provide good hardware for a dedicated server. I am only concerned about the Internet connection requirements. Does anyone have any idea what bandwidth is actually required for a spearhead server?

dionysos
spearhead is a bandwitch pussy... It's like 3 times what aa takes.
