So McDon {US only for now} is going to start selling all kinds of coffee like starbucks does, this should be a battle worth watching on Wall street, 2 big gaints going at it who will win? and who will not win?
Now you can get a Big Mac and a cappuccino at the same time oh boy.

I think Starbucks will hold their part of the market unless McDonalds steps up with its coffee, as in provides at minimal starbucks quality beverages for a cheap and competitive price. Anyways, I would find a coffee based beverage with my double cheeseburger meal repulsive, it's orange Fanta all the way.

Because nothing says fine coffee like mcDeath Burgers.... Yeesh!! Thats all I need; some doofus who has no clue how to run a register, and doesnt really want to be there anyway, trying to make a proper cafe AuLait.

Mind you, no restaurant north of the Louisiana state line knows how to make one either, but McDonalds?!?! vis.gif

Speaking as one of the formely worst junk-food indulgers in the world, now as a heathy eater I'm glad only to be going into Mac's to use the restroom - Starbuck's for me is only buying their tea / bran muffins [cheapest deal too tongue.gif ]..... From what I see, I don't think the big-wigs at Mac's really thought things through unless they're looking to only slightly chip away at Starbux crowd and/or aiming at those taking out their coffees. I can't see starbux regulars wanting to go into Mac's and 'relaxing' in a junkfood-brightly lit enviroment-with families all around... seems to me starbux go-ers go to starbux to relax in dimmed surroundings drinking a soothing beverage with other quiet folk.

First off, I hate coffee, ice tea or any drink that even taste similar to coffee. I am just repulsed by it. Don't know why. So my opinion here is completely impartial.
McDonalds, BurgerKing and the like have been experimenting with richer and more refined coffee for several years now. It has been very succesful. This is why McD's thinks they can play in the barrista market. I think they are right. Historically McD's used to pride itself in being able to offer a cup of coffee for 25cents. Starbucks has now set the price for a cup of coffea at $5 or $6 and that's not even counting the tip! So there is a tremendous amount of of profit avalaible in these barrista coffea items. McD's will tap into this market and will succeed. They will not put Starbucks out of business, so don't worry all you buckheads. There is plenty of room for competition.

On another note: I notoced some criticism of McD's in the posts. This would appear to stem from the general belief that their food is "junk food", meaning that it is fattening and unhealthy. I find this really funny because the most fattening, unhealthy coffee ever produced is made by.....STARBUCKS! It truly is the "junk food" KING of coffee.

I don't want to get to graphic but Greasy Mac's gives me the trots and coffee makes me piss like a racehorse. I think I'll stick to healh food like Bass Ale.

Starbucks is already in trouble as it is...Have been for awhile. It's really just a wait and see...But don't underestimate the power of a global franchise much larger than any other in the world.

Today -up here in canuckville- I noticed a Starbucks physically joined up with a McD's on the outside of a shopping mall- starbux had the streetside portion of this linked area and had mini- signs called 'McCafe'. Anyone seen this in the States?
Tristian
I've yet to see them in the states, but I've been to quite a few of them when I lived in Europe.

I am a coffee freak. I love coffee. My wife is on my ass about how much coffee I drink. I really dont care for Starbucks because most of their coffee is too sweet and overpriced. I much rather Caribou. There is just as many Caribou Coffee shops here as there is Starbucks. I think Starbucks has been hurting for money, at least in the Chicago area. They are bringing out some new low-fat coffee. I think its called a skinny latee.

Bottom line, I would not go to Starbucks nor McDonalds for coffee. I usually pick up some breakfast at McDonalds and then run through the Caribou or Dunkin Donuts drive through for my coffee.

Dunkin Donuts is possibly the greatest thing on Earth. I'm personally not a fan of coffee since the only coffee i drink is custom coffee made by my mom(She's the only one who can get it right, what can I say). However, with the mention of a DD, I become immediately interested. They're very scarce if not nonexistent in the DC metropolitan area so whenever I'm on vacation in a city with a DD, all I have for breakfast is DD.
Tristian
I guess this is true... Dunkin Donuts is quite popular in the Chicago area...I have it quite often, haha.

Lucky...I think the nearest DD to me is about 15 miles away towards Rockville within a block or so of a Home Depot.

At just about anywhere in a 50 mile radius of where I work, you can drive for 5 mins in any direction and find a DD. There is 2 of them literally within 2 mile stretch of the street my office is on.

McDonalds offers the convenience of a drive-thru and a much lower cost coffee. I don't mind Starbucks, but even the ones around DC w/drive-thrus take way too long. Maybe it's all the coffee snobs that want the skim milk, 3 splenda lattes w/two squirts of whipped cream and a splash of caramel? There's a 7-11 in our neighborhood and I go there every morning and get my coffee. It's coffee, it's a dollar, and I can say "large" without some kid looking at me like I'm crazy.... "I'm sorry, Venti" Reminds me of movie theater sodas, "I'm sorry sir, we don't have a small or medium cup, we start at large, xl, and extreme."

Not sure if anyone watches the show "The Big Idea" or not? It's a business show on CNBC and they had the founder of Starbucks on there a month or so ago. He basically said, your buying a 80 cent cup of coffee and paying $5 more dollars for the ambience and experience. Well, if I'm doing the drive-thru, I'm not getting that "experience" and I'm just over paying for coffee. I guess all and all, value is how your percieve it.
