I worked as a roughneck drilling oil years ago in the Permian Basin, just north of Odessa and Midland, Texas. That was relatively easy, move your rig, trench and start drilling to 5,500 feet. What they are talking about in the Bakken Formation is shale. I believe the only way they could extract that is with inseam horizontal drilling. That is incredibly expensive, but now that oil is costing so much per barrel, they just might have reached the magical point where that is doable.
Drilling in the sandy soil of Texas was hard enough. I can't imagine what it would be like to drill in the Bakken Formation. Ball busting work. I'd definitely want to let someone else pull that string out of the ground.
