That's training. He didn't think, he reacted. And that's why we are better than the ******************* we are dealing with. Our soldiers aren't over there to randomly kill. They are decent human beings that are well treained to do a job. The base job is to kill, but they are trained to be compassionate.
Forget the stories of Abu Graib and the rest. The average battlefield soldier is a trained killer, but also a caring human being, and that is part of their job.
We don't see enough footage of the every day lives of soldiers. Having friends there I know that daily life consists of maybe several hours of really dangerous work a week. The rest of the time (not that there aren't dangers) involves routines, and those routines involve the local populatioin and the good relations with them.
We only see and hear about the bad things that happen. But for every bad event there are hundreds of personal good moments between the common soldier and the community around him, or her. There is a high stress level, sure, but nobody stops to see how they just talk to local and how everyone just goes about life.
