All over but the Crying
A Billion.........

The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion," casually, think about whether you want the politician spending your tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into perspective in one of its releases.

a.. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
b.. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
c.. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
d.. A billion days ago no-one walked on two feet on earth.
e.. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government spends it.

b.. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

that one isn't quite accurate either, a billion minutes would put u in the year 102 AD.

c.. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

well i dunno when the stone age was, but that would put us in the year 112,150 BC so that would prolly be the stone age smile.gif

d.. A billion days ago no-one walked on two feet on earth.

that would put us 2,737,721 BC... dunno if things walked back then or not.

good analogies tho.

I'll do you one better.
The stone age isn't set, it's different for different parts of the world.
All depends on when the inhabitants moved to metalworking and the bronze age.
Or even better... It really only applies to a European timetable.

I would have to agree with TE on this one.
How ever originally wrote that should of got the numbers right.
Especially for something as near as what year it was a billion seconds ago.
All over but the Crying
maybe it was written 15 years ago. The point is that a billion is a big number for us to really comprehend.

A billion grains of sand is 1 cubic yard. Our galaxy has approximtely 400 billion stars in it. That means that if a grain of sand is a star it would take 4 cubic feet of sand to make just our galaxy alone. The Hubble space telescope is can make out an estimated 80 billion galaxies (a very small percentage of the Universe).
Perspective is relative.
