With the release of new Barbarossa II - Smolensk map, we need to close one of our Barbarossa servers to make room for the new map. We need your help in deciding how to go about this. Please vote in this poll! Comments are welcome. Thanks!

move my vote to that... sometimes 35 isn't quite enough....say to myself all the time "self, if we only had a few more minutes" I'm not gonna tell what my response to myself is though. -------------------- |

Maybe leave the no time limit alone and just run barb and smolensk on the other server.

I detest the 35 minute time limit. IMO it's not enough time, and too often the game ends in a draw.
I voted for a rotation between time limit and no time limit. Although increasing from 35mins to 60mins would probably be a good alternative also. Either way I'm excited to see a MOB Barb II server soon! -------------------- ![]() |

I suspect Smolensk will require a ~40 minute time limit, AHz has it running with a 60 minute time limit. The map feels larger then Barbarossa, probably due to all of the flanking opportunites (even though it's about the same size from what I've heard).

From my [ahem] lengthy experience on AHz Barbarossa server in it's busier days I think its better you keep time at 35 minutes. I think the other former AHz Barby server players you see here will echo the same remark. If I remember rightly, time limit was 45mins[60mins?]. A long, full round going without decision [stalemates/ties] incited some discontent.
The shorter round time encourages many to stay in the server due to the play intensity being ferocious and hectic with so much to do in that shortened time length. Only the players not understanding the time limit concept will be playing like sloths and camping in the middle of nowhere - fortunately for the sake of the team pushing towards the objectives, those folks are few. I played no time limit once and never again for me personally. The changeover in team personnel in the longer rounds threw me off when suddenly realising a good team mate or 2 you were playing in sync with, had to leave due to game going on very long. In fact I hope you have 35 to 40 min rounds for Barby2 rather than longer rounds, since it will encourage people to speed up their play on that slightly bigger map. To me its MUCH bigger in the way the avenues of approach are twisty and hidden spots for ambushers could slow play down unless the time limit is such that it encourages a blitzkrieg style of advance where an opening in enemy lines occurs. I suspect Smolensk will require a ~40 minute time limit, AHz has it running with a 60 minute time limit. The map feels larger then Barbarossa, probably due to all of the flanking opportunites (even though it's about the same size from what I've heard). lol.I didn't even see your post before I made mine Bob; seems we are on the same wavelength EDIT.... Another reason I'm for shorter round time limit is... all the vets of Barby know a match can be won in 8 minutes if the team plays smartly. I think the temptation by newcomers to camp will be much reduced when they see the vets growling about the correct Base attack sequence for avoiding mind numbing stalemates....not to say many tied-games are very exciting, but I think that's due to the fast ticking clock encouraging bold attacks and therefore [hopefully] furious defending -all good for keeping newcomers coming back for more. Playing the non-strategic way will lead to the impression there's never enough time imo. This post has been edited by Hellfighter: 01/27/06 7:15pm -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Run one with Barb2 and the other with the original barb...You could alternate time limit + no time limit on both servers.

CNQ seems to work well with a 60 minute limit. But then, in CNQ play everyone is focused on 2-3 points on the map which tends to make things fast-n-furious. But it might work well as ~40 minutes. I had a lot of fun playing CNQ on the AHz forums last night.
I'm wondering if we can run this map in a combination of CNQ/BAS. CNQ settings are pretty simple, looked like a time limit of 45 minutes and 400 points might work. It's not easy to achieve arty rank in a CNQ game unless you're on a kill streak or helping to cap flags. There's also no multi-round settings (best of 3 rounds, etc.) so rank can't carry over to a second round. Knowing that, I do lean more towards a 50-60 minute time limit with a 400 point limit. CNQ games are pretty fluid, so the longer playtime shouldn't really matter. (Maybe even as long as 75 minutes.) For BAS, OTOH, I'd love to see best of 3 or best of 5 rounds settings. The current BAS settings on the 35 minute server only ever allows 2 rounds, even if both teams are tied. Leave the time limit at 35 minutes, but make it end after 2 rounds if we've exceeded 70 minutes (or end after 2 rounds if one team crushed the other). -------------------- |

Some expert opinions on CNQ.
- Small maps, ie Gun Assault, Varaville, the new Lazur can hit 500 pts in a decent amount of time because of their size and furious combat. 45 mins is a good limit there. - Big maps like Town Assault, Barb and Smolensk can be a little more lengthy to reach 500 because they are much wider and combat, although puncuated by nasty fire fights, can have some quiet times. - 400 pts or 45 minutes is probably a good standard. Also, check out the CNQ master docs IB provides. You can tweak the crap out of the gametype with varied starting positions, cap timers, and I THINK, even round style play....been a while so my memory is foggy but pretty sure you can do round based. Everything is in the main CNQ .gsc files. -------------------- ![]() |

i never really liked the no-time-limit one, people don't really take it as seriously to win the match. i've noticed they fool around on it a bit more.

Maybe we could ease into the changeover... run the Barb1 map alternate with the next version of the Barb2 map on .76. (Beta1 is very good, but maybe we want to wait for a Beta2?) Set the timelimit to something lengthy (60 or 75min).
... And I spoke from ignorance about the CNQ settings, the file that I looked at was from 2 years ago, so I'm not sure what new/changed settings have been added to the gametype in later versions. This post has been edited by ScrapyardBob: 01/29/06 11:51pm -------------------- |
