curious if anyone else has been experienceing ping problems lately! My ping to most servers as of late have been in the range of 300 - 500, with the exception of a few which i'm assuming are closer to me in the west.

i normally run around 85 - 150 with most servers so this is quite a jump. I've checked for spyware with a few different programs as well as viruses with norton and found nothing, so not sure whats going on!

starting to get the jitters here as i've been unable to play for about 4 days now!

Usually whenever I play with you, you'll get high ping and then get kicked by PB.

Check your ISP.

You could try tracing first pinging your gateway. Usually you can find the Gateway in your router's configuration (if you use a router)or with the command ipconfig if you don't
from the command line:

ping theipofyourgateway

. If that ping is high, the problem is your machine our your line to the gateway, more than likely its either your machine or the line into your house. If that ping is ok, try the following command for windows.

tracert 8.9.4.77

What comes up will be all of the hops between your machine or router and the practice server. Look to see if any one of them is high. The first high ping should be your problem. Solving it, can be a whole different issue. Earlier in the summer, I was consistently having problems when I reached Level3 in Chicago. Level3 provides the hosting for clanservers.

well....that ping plotter tool is pretty cool. i go through 19 routes to get to 8.9.4.79 and my trouble starts on 15 in sanjose and continues to chicago! i'd post a screenshot for ya if you thought you could help me more from it.....thanks for your efforts so far!

ps-pinged my gateway and it was 15ms so that wasn't the issue!

thanx all!

OK now it gets interesting. In general, most networks are setup to go from "Point A" to "Point B" via the path that has the shortest number of hops. But what you sometimes discover is that the shortest hops don't always equal the smallest latency and shortest ping.

I just pinged University of Saskatchewan and got there with a Ping of 99ms. But, my traffic did not go through San Jose, it went first to DC, then to Chicago, then into CA on Shaw Cable's
lines to www.usak.ca.

I know that Saskatchewan is big, but it's kind of weird that your path is taking the REALLY long way round to chicago. You are probably going to have to call your providers help desk and deal with people who are going to try to make you go away until you reach someone who says "aha, here's the problem."

Go ahead and post the screen shot. That will tell us your provider and I can try to find the info for their NOC (Network Operations Center). The NOC for most providers is "The one ring that rules them all." Or at least they can tell you what is down and causing a problem.

Your problem is with level3.

Here's one of their utilities to trace routes. I have tried going from my end to San jose, San Francisco and Seattle but each time, my route is different than yours and doesn't show the extreme latecy of that 1 hop in San Jose.

http://lookingglass.level3.net/traceroute/...te=sfo1&target=

It should autodetect your ip and then try to trace back to it.

I have been unable to find any direct information about a level3 problem, but UC Davis' NOC reported periodic packet loss last night trying toreach level3 in San Jose.

hmm....problem still persists! i checked out that traceroute site and unfortunately, to me it looks like its telling me the same thing basically as pingplotter. the one thing i have noticed is that my ping is fine in the morning until about around 1-2 oclock and it gets steadily wose from then on! i'm thinking it must be due to a high traffic issue later in the day through that sanjose route, but thats just my fairly uneducated guess!

eusa_wall.gif this is where i'm at now lol! bs.gif
