hmm....problem still persists! i checked out that traceroute site and unfortunately, to me it looks like its telling me the same thing basically as pingplotter. the one thing i have noticed is that my ping is fine in the morning until about around 1-2 oclock and it gets steadily wose from then on! i'm thinking it must be due to a high traffic issue later in the day through that sanjose route, but thats just my fairly uneducated guess!

eusa_wall.gif this is where i'm at now lol! bs.gif

Did you try several of their choices. For examople trying the route to New Jersey, Atlanta, etc. Do those have the same problem. I'm really at a loss about your route right now.

These routes are correct or at least better. The Atlanta looks good. The Chicago and Dallas, both show a high latency at the first hop onto Saskatel (208.175.169.22). But the times are good up until the last hop from Toronto.

If the trace from Chicago to you goes via Toronto, I'm still confused as to why your route to the stock server goes through California. Who is your service with? Is it Sasktel?

I wish that I had more answers and fewer questions. But I do believe based on these routes and mine last night to usask.ca that there is a routing problem at your isp. That would explain the issues with you going through San Jose, and the high latencies that we see on the hop from Toronto.

Looking at the Sasktel webpage they seem to be doing upgrade,

http://www.sasktel.com/about-us/news/ngai/index.html

Check the maps at the bottom to see if your area is in the midst of an upgrade. Their announcement says downtimes of up to 4 hours, but they may not even be aware of this routing problem.

I have been having big ping problems too. I am good until about 4 PM and then I get piungs of over 300. I couldn't even get on ventrillo the other night. I traced my route and I have problems with ann ATT line at the sixth hop. I called my ISP (Charter cable) and they told me that the first 4 hops were their responsibility and the rest weren't. I asked then why am I paying you!? they told me to call ATT and lie that I wanted to switch providers to try and get them to fix it. I fucking hate technology!!!! How do thery expect me to understand this complex machinery when I am just a caveman at heart.

At least as cavemen we could beat the crap out of the people making our lives miserable.

The whole internet runs on a "Best Effort" basis. It operates on the concept that we will all make our "best effort" to deliver each others packets. Most of the time this gentlemen's agreement works remarkably well. That being said there is nothing that prevents the charter Network Ops Center from calling the ATT Ops center and asking the about the problem. As I noted with Canuk, the real issue is that you have to deal with multiple levels of people who's basic job description is not to solve your problem but to get you to go away.

I have had to call various NOCs a number of times in the past 10-15 years. These days its much more difficult to find a phone number for them. But if you can get through, you can almost always find someone who can and will help you figure out whats going on. Even if they can't solve the problem, they can get someone who can.

i've got a program called visualroute2006 that tells you all the hops and allows you to click on all the hops giving you there addresses and phone numbers etc. so now i've been sending multiple emails to begin with, soon i will start ringing phones, and hopefully i won't have to move on to threats...lol j/k

my ping to the server is fine eearly in the day, but by about 2 in the afternoon it climbs over our servers allowed ping rate of 175 and keeps getting worse to about 400ish.....then around midnight, when nobody is left to play with anyway, it starts getting better again....

Not to steal the thread, but once we get Canuck figured out, can we look into why I'm losing packets all over the place?

Thanks, but solve his problem first.

Start by tracing your route.

Then once you have the various hops, go back and ping them one at a time and look for packet loss. If they all have packet loss, there's a good chance that the problem is your network card, router, or dsl/cable connection. If only a couple have packet loss, its more likely that there are problems at the other end.

If they all have loss, start by rebooting your router and/or cable/dsl modem. If this doesn't work you're more than likely looking at needing a new card. The Intel cards are good in my opinion, but others are as well. I would not spend any money until I was sure that the problem was at my end.

During the summer, I was experiencing packet loss at level3 in chicago. I consistently was losing 5-10%.
