Taken care of......
Thanks DG. You know it's not that I didn't think it was funny; it kind of was; but I would like to think that if we are posting pics of ourselves, those pics belong to us. If someone is going to screw around with them, it would be considerate if you ask first, especially if you plan on posting it afterward.

Yeah, got your PM last week. I have a lot of hard copy information regarding Bastogne and Ardennes, involving 3rdArmy/10th Armored. A few of my grandfather's pics and all the clippings from the newspapers that my grandmother saved. I'll have to see what I can scan and upload sometime. In the meantime, I do have a scanned pic of my grandfather with a greasegun kneeling in front of his Sherman outside of Bastogne.
Brief history - he was tank leader for 10th Armored and obviously his tank. They were holding Bastogne with many other units, including 101st AB. They were attacked by a rush of armor after an artillery barrage. My grandfather's tank took out 2 tanks. He went up top to take a look around and saw a Panzer to his left, just as he was going down, he saw the tank fire at them. He was still closing the lid when the shell hit in which he recieved shrapnel all over his arms, hands, and forehead. His tank was on fire and one guy was already dead from the hit. He was attempting to pull the others out when his tank was hit again. He was blown away from the tank about 15 yards or so he believed. He came to awhile later but his tank was burnt and all his crew were dead. He checked into a field clinic to get patched up and then joined up with an artillery unit and helped them out till Bastogne was succesfully defended, then checked into the TMC. He was sent home a year later with a Purple Heart. There is a brief mention of this in the Band of Brothers book, but not in the movie. Oh well.

But everyone says that when someone tells them they look like a famous person. Lately I'm getting Renee Zellweger in "Bridget Jones's Diary"...I don't see the resemblence.

Click to view attachment Grandpa looks dashing with the dangling cig! I hope we talk more pez... I'll send you my email on pm->Let me know what WW2 stuff you like to study and I'll pass info to you from my 'archives'. It seems it's about where you are alot of times at a point in combat that makes the difference isn't it. Your Grandad was 'lucky' he was in the hatch-open spot I assume when he got blown away. I mentioned this in another thread- I spoke with a friend/vet who was in the WW2 Brits' Jewish Brigade-> long story short- he was on watch one night above deck on a transport ship crossing the Atlantic... torpedo hit the ship. He was one of 2 survivors out of 1500 on board.

Wow, Pez, no wonder you became such a WWII buff. That is an amazing picture and story of your grandfather. My grandfather was in the infantry in both WWI and WWII (he lied about his age to get into the first) , but I don't have a single picture of him taken overseas. I was very young when he died, so I never got to hear any of his war stories.

I'm alaways curious about those serving in both World Wars. Was he a commander in WW2 Hamma? Any info on his unit[s] he served in?

Ha! Behind those eyebrows are many scars from my days as a defensemen digging in the corners. A serious, but temporary back injury ended my hopes of playing college hockey ... and kept my eyebrows a little thicker than Tie's!
I really have no information about my grandfather's service, although I know he was an underage enlistee in WWI. I'll do some digging and see if I can't flesh this out a bit.

I hope you're successful. My dad recalled his uncle in Jamaica who was in the RAF [not sure if ground or flight personnel]. Unfortunately all he can tell me is remember seeing him on leave in his RAF outfit. If was in England now, I could do some detailed checking up since I have his last name.
ps. Your 'Tie Domi' pic has me eager to create one of my infamous photo montages.......
[I can see it now, Hamma's usual giggles at my photo manipulation 'creations' has been replaced with cold sweat on the brow and a big gulp
