If we wanted the oil Sr. would have got it the first time we were there. Iraq has always been small percentage of our imports compared to what we get from Canada and Mexico, respectively. Besides, they still haven't opened up the coast of Florida yet for drilling. We've been drilling off the coast of Texas, Mexico, and Louisiana for over 30 years, and we are still getting a shitload of oil and natural gas from there. Florida will be much the same.

But then again sometimes these 'speculations' turn out to be not so lucrative in quantity as originally thought. Crunch time is coming fast. Panic buttons by the experts are starting to be pressed now that we're facing the very real actuality of consuming resources beyond a sustainable limit regarding the future global population growth.

I don't care about your political beliefs or your opinions, but please... if you're going to represent Virginia, learn how to spell and punctuate. It's just embarrassing. BTW, you need to update yourself on where we get oil, it's not just Iraq. Please go back to school.

The point is that the world is decreasing its proven oil reserves by 10% each year, so you HAVE TO find more oil just to keep up with the current consumption. In addition, China is growing fast. China has 25% of the worlds population, and the industrial situation in China is compared to what happened in USA from 1900-1970 - just 10 times faster.....Take a wild guess what would happen to oil prices when China also want the American way of life, including consumption for oil.....(You really have to find shitloads of oil....)

I think the main reason Bush went to Iraq is to secure a safe supplychain of oil from the arab states. Why? Because roughly 60-70% of the world resources of oil is located in that area. Besides, USA is consuming over 100% more oil than they are producing. http://www.scaruffi.com/politics/oil.html

So just to maintain the American way of life they are dependent of oilimports from these arab states (Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia,Libya, Kuwait, Emirates) Looks like a real challenge to me....Unfortunately many muslim states hate America and all it stands for - and the regimes in these countries are very unstable......So a presence from USA and other western countries is just a prerequisite to maintain world order. Imagine what happens if Al-Qaida "look-alikes" get control over 60-70% of the world oil reserves............ huh.gif

Cpt. Snot Rocket
First, There's much in the advancement in technology to find natural reserves. This technology actually shows that there is much more at known sites than previsiously calculated. Take the Gulf of Mexico. The Natural Gas reserves have been updates 3 times in the last 50 years showing a 600% increase in what was thought to be their in the 50's. A recent study shows that Canada is likely sitting on the 2nd largest oil reserve in the world. It goes on and on. Russia is just now getting the technology and infrastructure to pull huge amounts of oil out of Siberia.

If you are worried that increase in demand inflates prices consider this fact. Iron Ore, Coal, Tungsten, and Copper prices are nearly the same now than the 70's. Of course demand for these products has absolutely skyrocketed. So why has the price remained low? Because when there is demand, people produce. The oil pricing is controled by a illegal agreement among the OPEC nations. Unfortunetly, they control a huge percentage of the current oil flow. This will change when the other oil reserves hit the market.

Of course, who wants to try and understand our global economy and actully sound intelligent when one can just to blame George Bush. After all, it is all his fault that people built a city in LA that was under the water level, and then he did nothing to stop that hurricane from hitting it.

They should make a movie like Armegeddeon where Bush orders planes to fly into the hurricane and they magically divert it into Cuba or something. I also think it's hilarious how everyone points the finger at Bush over Katrina. Morons.

............After all, it is all his fault that people built a city in LA that was under the water level, .......

A typo of course...... ohmy.gif . But we'll blame Bush if there's a cataclysmic earthquake inLA.

As for 'morons' comment Pez
It's erroneous to think people are elevating Bush to Godly status and he himself directed Katrina at LA, let alone having the power to "stop it from hitting" [he and the mayor DID announce to N.O residents to 'get out of Dodge' so to speak]... But that criticism of critics is just like believing someone can't be for the decision to go to Iraq but be against the war after finding out neo-cons had no preparations for finishing up what a thorough job the military did getting to Baghdad.
I think the heavy Bush criticism regarding the hurricane hitting L.A ... errr, New Orleans was more about a very tardy follow-up rescue effort since knowing full well a massive hurricane was about to hit, there should've been speculation to consider a 'what if' the flood walls breached swift response scenario---> similar to the post-Baghdad capture phase by Bush&coy. foul-up
....
Anyway have a read here
http://www.naftc.wvu.edu/NAFTC%20eNews/Oct...oilreserve.html

.... remember many claims of more available oil resources than previously thought are only estimates.

I hope globally we get into alternative cleaner fuel resources or who knows if we irreversibly screw things up not managing our eco-systems/enviroment nobody will be about to use any fuel

None of this is appropriate in a clan's forums, nor does it do anything but divide us when it has nothing to do with gaming. I have never seen one of these forum arguments result in anything more than hurt feelings on both sides of any argument.

If you want to effect change, run for an office, or campaign for someone you really believe in.

But no matter what, vote.

If you don't vote, look no farther than the face in your mirror to complain about.

Many of us forum dweller's echo Pez's opinion too. Debate's are a mainstay of these 'discussion oriented' topic forums. Seeing various points of view is healthy and readers can possibly acquire the art of respecting other's viewpoints even though not agreeing with it. Some of us chums here have found each other's opinions as different as night and day but we're still chums. It's like I respect your conclusion but I don't agree that's an absolute truth - from my point of view.

You obviously have no belief in the market...If the prices on precious metals don't go up as the demand "has skyrocketed" as you put it - its because the offer side can deliver! Thats because there are no obvious shortage of these commodities.

I agree about the OPEC. They have power to "manipulate" prices to a certain extent because of the Saudi-Arabian big market share. But the fact is that there aren't enough proven oil reserves out there (anywhere) to keep up with the upcoming demand - despite of what you claim Snot Rocket. There has not been any significant new oil fields since the 80's, and the "new technology" stuff is purely guesswork. Every big oil company is now downgrading its reserves (Shell, Exxon, Statoil, BP). USA is not down in Iraq just for the fun of it. Oil is a big issue here.

To Steel: Debating is not tearing people apart. It's a democratic thing and is enlightning people. If the banner says "War on terror" I expect debating - not propaganda. I love a good debate - and I Iove to hear other peoples opinion. You can't expect that every man out there agree with you in every matter. But thats OK for me (and for everybody else I hope). I love a good debate. It makes the world go round.... wink.gif

I disagree Kleerance. You say the there is an oil shortage, I say not. I am not convinced that the presence of oil in the ground is in short supply. The oil prices would be far lower than what they are now if OPEC did not limit production. To emphasize my point, OPEC just called an "Emergency Session" to limit production to increase prices.

There are scientists who believe that it may be possible that oil is actually produced by the earth. This is based on once empty wells suddely being able to pump again. http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig5/crispin8.html

How about those Oil and Gas reserves that are "Decreasing"?

"Adelman notes that in 1944, a special expert mission estimated Persian Gulf reserves at 16 billion proved and 5 billion probable. By 1975, those same fields had produced 42 billion barrels and had 74 billion remaining. In 1984, geologists estimated a five percent probability of another 199 billion barrels remaining to be added in the Gulf region. In five years those reserves had already been added. (Adelman, 1993)."

How about China http://english.people.com.cn/200601/18/eng...118_236307.html

Australia http://www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?a_id=35281

And more http://www.radford.edu/~wkovarik/oil/3unconventional.html

Most of the oil in Alaska, Russia and China has not even been drilled yet.

Yes, I am well aware that falsly reported reserves can help ensure funding for exploration. An no, I don't think there is an unlimited supply of oil that will last forever.

But let's deal with facts and not the media hyperbole that "we are running out of oil and the world is coming to an end."

Regards,

Your MOB Brother

I think there might be a shortage of "known" oil. Once we find the door to Narnia, all our problems will be solved.

<H2 align=left>Hey Snot-Rocket,</H2>
We obviously have different sources, and only time will tell. We can place our bets at the markets eh? smile.gif

The tread is war on terror, and in my opinion oil is one significant reason for USA presence in Iraq.(And of course the war against terror.)USA have to be attended where 60-70% of the worlds oilreserves are, just to secure a safe supply in the future.

R4. Oil Discovery minus Consumption (world)

IPB Image

The really important statistic about discovery is shown here as the difference between what the world discovers and what it consumes. Until 1980 (with the exception of 1972), we had been discovering more than we used. Since then, the trend has gone into negative and we are eating away at our stores of oil. As discovery is expected to continue to fall and consumption rise, it can only get worse. wink.gif
