Legalization of marijuana

With the recent crisis on oil and reliance on foreign oil in this country, especially during the hurricane Katrina disaster it may be time to explore the possibility of eliminating the prohibition on Cannabis sativa and hemp in America. During the recent disaster, oil and fuel became scarce. Foreign oil companies delivered the best they could, but our needs have out grown our supplies and during a crisis we need to look for other sources of fuel, to supply industry and consumer driven needs.
At the current moment we have invested 46.7 billion dollars to fight the war on drugs. Marijuana is the most abundant drug and the most available drug in America. The current estimate for people arrested for drug charges in the United States is 1.5 million, 677 thousand are arrested for possession of marijuana. (Drug War Clock) This is a large percent of the prison population, which the taxpayers must account for when they pay taxes. The cost to put away a drug offender is 30,000 dollars per year. But if you include all the costs to convict and hold a drug offender is 250,000 total (for an average 5 year prison term). This cost could be cut and transferred other areas that are in need of funding, such as cancer research and educational funding.
Until 1937 when the Marijuana Tax act was passed, it was a widely used and farmed commodity. The uses for hemp production vary as much as the consumers needs vary, from medical uses and creams to industrial oil and fuel to keep the transportation industry moving. Writer Joel Miller from worldnetdaily.com wrote about this best during an article that was published on Global research.ca when he said “Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the diesel engine, designed it to run on vegetable and seed oils like hemp; he actually ran the thing on peanut oil for the 1900 World's Fair. Henry Ford used hemp to not only construct cars but also fuel them.
As an alternative to methanol, hemp has at least one glowing report: the plant produces up to four times more cellulose per acre than trees. And a hemp crop grows a little quicker than a forest.
As for an alternative to petroleum,

• Growing and harvesting the stuff has much less environmental impact than

procuring oil.

slashed by using “bio-diesel.”

• Hemp fuel is nontoxic and only a mild skin irritant; anybody who’s ever cleaned out

• Growing hemp for fuel would be a tremendous boon for American farmers and the

agricultural industry, as opposed to people like, say, the Bush family.

And that’s why hemp might not go anywhere as a fuel alternative. Oil interests are big and donate likewise to politicians, and selling a man on an idea that will cost him more than he’ll benefit requires an amazingly skilled orator” (Rising Gasoline prices: Put hemp in your tank) The reason that marijuana was put into prohibition was that it had a degenerate effect on the minority population. “Marijuana was outlawed in 1937 as a repressive measure against Mexican workers who crossed the border seeking jobs during the Depression. The specific reason given for the outlawing of the hemp plant was its supposed violent "effect on the degenerate races." (Testimony of Bureau of Narcotics Commissioner Harry J. A slinger, in testimony before Congress in hearings on the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937). “ (Basic Facts About the War on Drugs) Along with the testimony from Anslinger, “The American Medical Association specifically testified that they were opposed to the law. When the supporters of the law were asked about the AMA's view on the law on the floor of Congress, they lied and said that the AMA was in favor of the law because they knew the law would never pass without the AMA's endorsement. The law passed, and the AMA later protested, but the law was never repealed.” (Basic Facts About the War on Drugs)
This would never have passed with our current outlook on humanity, and civilization as a whole. Society has grown beyond the self-destructive attitude that had incorporated the traditional American outlook on minorities such as Native American Indians, Asian, Mexican and Black populations. American society has grown beyond the stereotyping that embraced us back during that time period.
According to the Drug Enforcement Agency web site “Marijuana contains more than 400 chemicals” (Exposing the Myth of Smoked Medical Marijuana) this being compared to “Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic.” (Cigarette) A cigarette contains more then 3600 chemicals and more then 500 addictive chemicals intentionally placed to make them addictive. According to the Henningfield Ratings Cigarettes are rated as a class 1 dependence drug compared to the class 6 dependence drug, marijuana. With this information we can see that legal cigarettes are far more addictive then Marijuana, Alcohol reigns in at a level 4.
With this being said marijuana is a drug, easily grown and easier to distribute among the American population in an underground market that is plagued with violence and death. People who use Marijuana, tend to get the munchies, which can lead to, over eating and sleeping. Eating junk food can in its self can generate a mass of medical problems not to mention what the tar from smoke will do to the lungs of the average smoker. There is social pressure at most places of employment to hire on users and effectively eliminate any possible users from most places of employment.
Marijuana has its dangers in our society that also place it with lung cancer. Smoke itself does not support life on its most basic principle, so the inhalation of it is deemed to pose risks. Marijuana smoke also contains tar which is a known agent that causes cancer. Induced lethargy can also be partially blamed on the effects of marijuana, seeing as it makes boredom complacent and reduces the competitive edge that people need in their workplace.
With all this in mind, I believe that marijuana should be legalized to reduce the amount of prison population, reduce logging for paper products, increase efficient fuels for industry, and less reliance on foreign oil. The alcohol industry would be aggressively seeking to keep prohibition, to dominate an American pastime that at one point was also prohibited and reintroduced after much debate and concern from the American public. With America spending and attempting to secure our borders from drugs and terrorists I feel that all our attention should be put on stopping terrorists and taking people that use Marijuana and letting them be a productive part of society.

They almost legalized marihuana in Canada about 2 years ago....they had bus loads of people travelling around and smoking it on the steps of different police stations...even ours...the press was all over it and its been a hot topic within our government for the past few years.

If it ever becomes legalized the Government will monitor who can sell it and tax it as well...just like cigarettes...any peolpe manufacturing it will have to pass a certain critera to ensure the content of it. Thus the cost will probably double or triple.

In Canada one must have a certain weight to charge for possession. Having one joint on your person would not lead to criminal charges. Now...if you have over a certain weight you can be charged with possession and trafficking.

The issue I have is that most people who do sell it are also into trafficing other narcotics as well. Normally dealers in our area can get you almost anything you need. E and cocaine are big problems in Canada. Heroine is also a major problem.

Legalization also leads to tarriffs with the inporting and exporting of the drug.

My suggestion.......Move to Mexico.....LOL

well its not the legalization that is so important of THC hemp, its the uses of non-thc hemp that is so important. pot is a natural source of oils and fibers. the US consitution is written on it, during WWII farmers and 4h was encouraged to grow it to utilize the fiber content to meet demands for war documents etc. diesel engines can run on hemp oil and eliminate the need for fossil (?) fuels and high content emissions that pollute and destroy the ozone. not to mention that IF we used hemp oil to just be used as a enegry source the profit margin for the farmers would double, giving better economic gratuity to support economic standards. the possibilites are endless. canada is a great source of THC provider BC and toronto are great! for the possibility of DWI, POT DOES not have the same effects as liquor. reaction time is not as impaired and less effects to the brain and other organs. what is the ratio to people convicted for DWI on THC to DWI to Liquor/beer? (mind you that the THC would have to be W/O ANY ALKI in their system. a person that drives under the influence of beer and pot would not qualify as a thc dwi.) well anyways i could debate the issue of illegal narcotics with you all day, just remember that the AMA was origionally infavor of legal pot. BUT oil companies would suffer from economic distaster if the fuel (hemp oil) was put into motion.
